UTS and Ho Chi Minh City talk smart cities and Industry 4.0

UTS deep and thriving engagement in Vietnam has led to visit by Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, where discussions centred on common research interests across smart cities and Industry 4.0.

On 16 April the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City visited Sydney to strengthen bilateral ties and foster collaboration in areas such as science and technology through a new strategic partnership between NSW and Ho Chi Minh City province.  Committee Chairman Mr Nguyen Thanh Phong led a delegation of senior officials whose itinerary included an afternoon at UTS.

The dynamic and growing engagement of UTS in Vietnam led the Committee to request a visit to the campus – the only tertiary institution on their itinerary.  Recent UTS activity in Vietnam includes the establishment of a partnership with leading business and research cluster Vingroup, as well as a new Joint Technology and Innovation Research Centre in Ho Chi Minh City.

Vice Chancellor and President Professor Attila Brungs welcomed the delegation, acknowledging the importance of UTS’s relationship with Ho Chi Minh City through university and industry collaboration, and highlighting the University’s interest in deepening such cooperation to open up new opportunities.

Senior representatives of the Faculty of Engineering and IT led a tour of flagship facilities including ProtoSpace, the Centre for Autonomous Systems infrastructure labs, and Data Arena.

At the conclusion of the visit, Chairman Nguyen expressed his wish to continue building on the relationship and exploring further avenues of cooperation with UTS, with a focus on technology for smart cities and Industry 4.0.

Ho Chi Minh City has announced its strategy to transform into the first smart city in Vietnam. Technology for smart cities and Industry 4.0 are key research strengths for UTS, placing it in a pivotal position to support the vision of Ho Chi Minh City and its next generation of researchers.

The joint research centre between UTS and Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology is perfectly placed to harness this highly-skilled workforce for development by experts both in Ho Chi Minh City and Sydney.

Such partnerships between UTS and the broader Ho Chi Minh City ecosystem contribute to the strong relationship between Australia and Vietnam. They are instrumental in achieving the aims of the strategic partnership, driving bilateral cooperation in key areas of common strategic interest.
