Space Optimiser Pty Ltd, an NSW-based company aiming to revolutionise home renovation planning, is partnering with researchers from UTS to develop a groundbreaking AI-powered home design platform that turns ideas into ready-to-go floor plans.

The collaborative research project, titled ‘Smart Spaces: Building an Intelligent Ecosystem for Design, Renovation, and Maintenance’, is developing a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) for the Space Optimiser platform. The project aims to tackle the high costs and complexities homeowners face when planning renovations by leveraging artificial intelligence to make professional-grade design accessible and affordable.

AI-powered design made simple

The UTS research team, led by Professor Farookh Khadeer Hussain, is developing an AI engine capable of generating optimised floor plans, providing intelligent interior design recommendations, offering preliminary cost estimations, and flagging potential compliance issues based on user input. This will empower homeowners and renovators to visualise and plan their projects with greater confidence and significantly reduced upfront design costs.

The development will follow an agile, sprint-based methodology, ensuring the platform is built iteratively with a strong focus on user-centred design and real-world validation.

Professor Farookh Khadeer Hussain, the UTS Lead Researcher, expressed his support for the initiative: “This project is a perfect example of applied AI research. We are taking cutting-edge algorithms and deploying them to solve a genuine, widespread problem for Australian homeowners. Our goal is to make the complex simple and the expensive accessible, all through the power of artificial intelligence.”

Mustafa Hassanali and Farhahna Hassanali, Founders of Space Optimiser Pty Ltd, said: “Our vision is to remove the barriers to great design.

“This partnership with UTS’s world-class AI experts is a crucial step in building a robust, intelligent platform that can instantly interpret a user’s vision and translate it into a practical, compliant, and beautiful floor plan.

“This technology will fundamentally change how people begin their renovation journey.”

Through its Australian Artificial Intelligence Institute (AAII), the project is a testament to UTS's industry-focused approach and its position as a global leader in artificial intelligence research and application.
