Students who have received a new course offer and wish to delay their studies by a year may be eligible to defer their course commencement. To check eligibility, please read the information here. If you intend to defer your offer, please do not submit a course withdrawal.

Course withdrawal is the permanent withdrawal from your entire course at UTS.

If you wish to withdraw from a subject only, please refer to the information on subject withdrawals on the enrolment changes page.

Giving up a university place is an important decision, so you should make sure you get advice on all of your options before you decide. For advice and information before you withdraw from your course, you can speak to:

  • A counsellor from UTS Student Services
  • an academic adviser
  • UTS International (for international students)
  • Jumbunna IIER (for Aboriginal and/or Torres Straight Islander students)

How to apply for a course withdrawal?

Want to withdraw from a course?

Online course withdrawal form

If you are a research student, visit the Graduate Research School course withdrawal page.

You can lodge an application by using the online course withdrawal form. If you wish to withdraw from more than one course, lodge separate applications for each course.

You can access the online course withdrawal form by logging in to My Student Portal, then selecting 'eRequest', navigating to the heading 'I want to withdraw', and selecting 'I want to withdraw from my course'.

Course withdrawal is effective from the date you lodge your application.

What if I have subject enrolments in the current session?

Please carefully read the information below if you have subject enrolments in the current session.

Applications lodged by the census date:

  • you will not incur academic penalty for the enrolled subjects,
  • subjects in which you were enrolled will be cancelled, and
  • refund and/or remission of your upfront tuition fees and/or HELP debt will be calculated.

Applications lodged after the census date;

  • your subjects will be withdrawn with academic penalty,
  • a Withdrawn Fail grade will appear against the subjects that you were enrolled in,
  • you will not be automatically entitled to a refund or remission of your upfront tuition fees, and
  • your HELP Debt will not be recalculated.

If you wish to withdraw after the census date due to special circumstances, such as an illness or misadventure, please refer to the Refunds and Remissions webpage.

If you wish to receive final results for your subjects in the current session, please wait until your results are released before lodging an application.

Applications that are submitted after the last day of the final assessment period will be placed on hold and processed after results are released.

Once you have submitted your application you will receive two emails, both sent to your UTS Webmail account:

  • a confirmation receipt of your application, and
  • the notification of the outcome of your application

Additional requirements for international students

Before you withdraw from your course, you should contact UTS International to discuss your decision.

You should also discuss your decision with your faculty or a counsellor in the Student Services Unit.  There may be some other way of dealing with your immediate problem so that you can continue your study at a later date. For example, it may be possible to apply for Leave of Absence.

If you are a research student you must consult your supervisor before submitting your notice of course withdrawal online.

Course withdrawal and your student visa

If you are in Australia on a student visa it is a condition of your visa that you maintain your enrolment at UTS for the full duration of your visa.

If you withdraw from your course, UTS is required by law to notify the Department of Home Affairs.

Unless you apply for another kind of visa or enrol at a different institution, the Department of Home Affairs may cancel your student visa within 28 days of your withdrawal.

If you have withdrawn from your course you must contact the Department of Home Affairs as soon as possible to discuss your options:

  • 131 881; or
  • attend the nearest Department of Home Affairs Office (opens an external site).

Student questions

What if I just want to withdraw from a subject and continue with my course?

If you want to withdraw from a subject, you must do so before the census date. You can find more information on withdrawing from subjects on the enrolment changes page.

How can I get advice on course withdrawal?

Before applying for course withdrawal, you should always discuss your decision and its implications with someone who can help you out. Leaving your course permanently is a big decision, so make sure that you have considered all of your options and made a decision which works for you. If possible, keep your options open to resume study here or elsewhere in the future.

What happens when I am withdrawn from my course?

Your course status will change to "Withdrawn". You will no longer have access to UTS facilities and your student webmail account. Please ensure you save any important emails before applying to withdraw.
