Experience health at UTS

hi i'm adam master of physiotherapy student at the graduate school of health today i'll be taking you on a virtual tour of the graduate school of health's new home 100 broadway 100 broadway has been purposely designed to accommodate learning spaces for specific teaching needs the building is unique as it brings all of the disciplines including clinical psychology genetic counseling orthoptics pharmacy physiotherapy and speech pathology under one roof to create an incredibly collaborative space we're the only students to use this building which creates a great community of postgraduate allied health professionals in training as you make your way through the building you will notice a woven motif throughout this is an acknowledgement of the local indigenous radical people who were traditionally basket weavers uts stands on the lands of the radical people of the euro nation and we consulted with our indigenous community for these design features technology was an important factor for the graduate school of health during the design process to facilitate this need the school has installed a program called bayline which allows students to collaborate record and review patient interactions there are bee line cameras in every simulation space that streams the pog classrooms in real time let's go check out some of the spaces [Music] Pod Classrooms our tour begins on the level 5 pod classroom pod classrooms are available on level 5 9 and 10 they've been designed as an open and interactive space to allow collaboration and group work within the classroom on level 5 is the simulated pharmacy dispensary which gives pharmacy students a space to role play and practice patient counselling skills let's move to level six [Music] Postgraduate Student Lounge on level six is a postgraduate student lounge this is an open area where you can have your lunch there's a fully functional kitchen with a fridge and a dishwasher you can also come here to socialise or study Physiotherapy Pinning Room right next to the postgraduate student lounge is a physiotherapy plinth room this room is connected to simulation space which provides real-life clinical settings for students to practice level 7 is next follow me [Music] Teaching Clinic on level 7 you'll find the teaching clinic the teaching clinic is a student-led one where they can put into practice what they've learnt in class this reception area is the first point of contact for visitors clinical psychology was the first discipline to move here at 100 broadway after establishing a successful clinic in 2015. speech pathology was the next discipline to follow suit establishing a clinic here in 2019 technology and healthcare is growing including the use of telehealth currently clinical psychology and speech pathology are using this technology to gain valuable skills which they'll use in practice in the future this space is purposely built to accommodate all of our disciplines with plans to expand services in the future Indigenous Health Community Room right next to the teaching clinic is the indigenous health community room this is a multi-purpose room in which aboriginal and torres strait islander community members can access if they are using the clinic the space can also be used for activities like cultural awareness training and is available for aboriginal and torres strait islander community services to use as a meeting room connecting them to uts now on to level 8. let's go Virtual Reality Room level 8 houses the virtual reality room this room is specially designed with state-of-the-art technology to research how virtual technologies can be used to treat different health conditions the technology is mostly accessed by speech pathologists but increasingly is being used across all of our disciplines in order to develop new ideas and educational experiences Observation Room next is the observation room this room is quite unique it has two cameras on either wall to observe all activities that occur in this room the space is currently used to facilitate direct coaching where our clinical psychologist can communicate with parents in the room through a headset researchers and high degree research students across all disciplines intend to use this observation room for upcoming research projects Research Rooms just around the corner here we have a new suite of research rooms the research conducted here will allow researchers to work together on collaborative and interprofessional projects in the orthoptic teaching clinic on level 8 and 9 students have access to essential orthoptic equipment and the latest technology the athoptic teaching clinic rooms have been designed for students to learn orthoptic clinic skills in small groups and simulate a clinical environment let's take the stairs to level 10. [Music] Zoom Room we're going to finish our tour on level 10 in the zoom room where academics from all disciplines can conduct their classes online this room is especially used by genetic cancelling as the program is online you will see genetic counselling students using the pod classrooms and the clinic 4 simulation a couple of times a year when they are on campus thank you for joining me on this tour i hope to see you at 100 broadway very soon

hi welcome to uts faculty of health and welcome to our tour of the moore park precinct this facility was built in partnership with rugby australia sydney cricket and sports ground trust here at moore park uts we're extremely lucky to be surrounded by elite high performance sport such as rugby league rugby union cricket and afl let's come and look inside and see what's available here at uts for sport and exercise students Exercise Physiology [Music] our first stop is one of our two exercise physiology teaching labs both of these labs have rolling ergometers cycle orgometers and treadmills for practical learning they also have technology for vo2 max testing lactate threshold and blood ph now we've Biomechanics arrived in the biomechanics teaching lab here in our biomechanics classes we use these computers here for interpretation of movement analysis data that has been collected in the biomechanics research lab upstairs this room also allows for four-split demonstrations in class and more we have a number of these Tutorials general teaching spaces for tutorials most tutorials for sport and exercise students are held at mall park while some are held at the city campus and some online as you can see we have a number of flat screen tvs available for students to plug in laptops to work on group assignments during class [Music] Sports Hall the sports hall is also on this level this is a vertical space used for teaching performances events or indoor sports such as basketball netball and volleyball the change room and showers are just outside and as students we can use this space when it's not being used for teaching [Music] Resistance Training Room now we're in the resistance training room this is where sport and exercise students get practical experience supervising and prescribing exercise we also learn the fundamentals of coaching and performing power and olympic lifts now let's go look at the research labs [Music] hi there this is the first of the sport and exercise research labs this is the exercise physiology and biochemistry research lab Treadmills it's equipped with treadmills a range of exercise bikes and devices that assess physiological responses to exercise now let's come through to the environmental lab Environmental Lab so this is a special sealed room that controls temperature and humidity and that way researchers can investigate the effects of the environmental conditions during athletic performance Biomechanics Lab this is a biomechanics research lab using technology that digitizes movement researchers can measure the impact of speed and other forces placed on the body during exercise there's a lot of high-tech equipment like the biodex machine which can be used to identify and document physical impairments that can be used for pre-season screening injury prevention and performance enhancement there are motion and force plates in the ground which are used for gait and motion analysis kinesiology ergonomics as well as sport and performance analysis 2d and 3d motion analysis cameras digitize movement so that researchers can analyze gait sport performance and skill performance Skill Acquisition and Motor Control so this is a skill acquisition and motor control research lab so in here this is a flexible space that can be used in a variety of ways in order to measure and develop perceptual cognitive skills for high performance athletes and officials depending what you're using this room for we have a running track a vision projection wall and 3d motion analysis technology head cameras and eye tracking glasses are used by researchers to understand how athletes move and interact this room is sometimes set up with drum kits and that way we can test an athlete's coordination and decision making skills when on field we in class have in fact used these drum kits so that we can solve coordination problems this special Body Composition Lab room is the body composition lab in here is the dual energy x-ray or dexa machine it measures athlete's bone density muscle and fat content providing an assessment of body composition that feeds into both health and performance outcomes now let's head upstairs [Music] so we've reached the top floor up here are more classrooms student meeting areas a student lounge and kitchen Rooftop Terrace it is our final stop the rooftop terrace [Music] out here this open air running track is used for practical assessment of speed and acceleration of athletes up here also have expensive views of the sydney skyline including the uts tower building well thanks so much for joining us on our tour we hope you've enjoyed this insight into being a sport and exercise student at uts we'll see at uts soon

welcome to the uts faculty of health thank you so much for joining our nursing lab tour on this level there are 16 clinical labs and eight simulation bays for our nursing and midwifery students and here we're standing outside our clinical administration unit who organize students clinical placements in healthcare settings like hospitals aged care and community settings let's head over the bridge to have a look at our facilities used for our nursing students [Music] here is our first stop a medical surgical nursing lab Clinical Lab Tour our labs are set up to look and feel exactly like hospitals aged care facilities and primary healthcare services the setup is flexible and there are generally two areas the classroom area and the simulation area in the simulation area of five to six bed spaces between the labs is a preparation and equipment room during class we access equipment we need for different nursing procedures back in the lab we have mannequins to simulate patients many of them are robotic and they have different levels of authenticity or ability to mimic real life patients some can stimulate coughing vomiting perspiring fitting and shivering they can bleed or simulate a cardiac or respiratory arrest they can speak cry and groan so we can tell how they are feeling just like a real life patient simulated based learning also involves role-playing where actors people with lived experience students and teachers all engage in clinical scenarios these experiences help us to develop communication empathy and teamwork skills which are critical to good nursing let's go meet one of our patients sim men Simulations when you look around our patient's bed you'll notice a lot of high-tech equipment the large lcd screen can show data and scans such as blood results and x-rays the monitor shows the patient's heart rate oxygen saturations temperature and blood pressure anything a student does to treat the mannequin will be mirrored in their observations so if they give blood pressure medicine the mannequin's blood pressure will change in response on the ceiling are two microphones to capture what people are saying when they're working in this bed space three cameras reflect what's happening and can be viewed or saved in the control room for students to reflect on and learn from after the simulation we've now entered the control room behind the one-way mirror it's the working hub for many simulated experiences the instructor pc shows the patient monitor screen he controls the mannequin and the response is triggered by students when they provide patient care an instructor can direct this simulation from here as speaking as a patient through the mannequin or they can talk to the students by the speaker above the bed space what happens in the control room is designed to ensure that simulations are realistic clinical scenarios so that students can learn in a really immersive way now let's go have a look at one of our pediatric wards this space mimics a children's hospital setting nursing students learn about pediatrics throughout their degree and they can also pick a pediatric elective in their third year the mannequins in here range from newborn to 12 years but they have the same range of features as adult mannequins pediatric processes can be complex and one of the most important nursing skills is to administer medication correctly because children's body weight is available and much lower than adults medication calculation is essential hi again this is the perioperative nursing lab you'll see that we have an operating theatre set up in here in third year nursing students can select perioperative nursing as an elective and this particular space is called the community room it's flexible and can be used to simulate primary health care consultations mental health nursing visits care of an elderly person in their home and more the last lab we'll visit today is this one the practice lab this is where we can book in additional practice of our clinical skills and build our confidence before clinical placements and assessments on our way up we'll take you past the student kitchenette in the kitchenette we have a fridge freezer and microwave to be used by students at any time and now we'll see a health student computer and printing area there's plenty of desks and bookable meeting rooms on this level which makes it a popular place for group work and independent study [Music] thanks so much for joining our tour we hope you enjoyed gaining insight into being a nursing student at uts see you at uts soon you
