This notice outlines how the University of Technology Sydney (referred to UTS, we, us, our) collect, use, disclose, and retain your personal information in connection with our marketing and communications activities, and how you can exercise your privacy rights. We may collect personal information that you provide to us directly, or that is generated when you interact with UTS marketing campaigns, events, and communications. This may include:

  • Name, email address, postal address, phone number, or other contact details
  • Your expressed interests (e.g., course areas, event attendance preferences)
  • Current or previous school, employer, course or program interests
  • Event registration details, dietary or accessibility requirements, and photographs or video (where applicable)
  • Subscription preferences for newsletters or updates
  • Information from third parties such as campaign partners, enquiry platforms, or social media (where permitted)

If you are under 16 years of age, you must obtain approval from a parent or guardian before providing personal information to UTS.

We may receive this information from others. For example:

  • the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC)
  • a parent or legal guardian, your school or related school program
  • a course finder, social media or campaign site that may advertise our course offerings on our behalf
  • UTS College, if an enquiry to them relates to a UTS course. Refer to UTS College’s privacy notice.

3. Using your information

We use your personal information to:

  • Communicate with you about UTS courses, events, services, and opportunities
  • Provide information tailored to your interests and manage your subscriptions
  • Deliver, manage, and improve our marketing, recruitment, and engagement campaigns
  • Analyse the performance and effectiveness of communications, including segmentation and market research, as well as for other quality improvement and planning, including strategic planning purposes.
  • Comply with legal and regulatory obligations, or conduct internal investigations

We use cookies, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning technologies within our advertising and analytics platforms to optimise campaigns and deliver improved experience for our online advertising. We do not use the data collected under this notice for making automated decisions that may impact on your rights or have a significant impact on you.

4. Online advertising and remarketing

UTS uses cookies, pixels and advertising technology platforms to deliver relevant digital advertising and understand campaign performance. These may include Google, Meta (Facebook and Instagram), TikTok, LinkedIn, The Trade Desk, Taboola and other digital partners.

Activities may include:

  • Showing UTS ads on other websites or platforms after you have visited ours (remarketing)
  • Measuring campaign effectiveness and optimising future advertising
  • Using securely hashed information (such as email addresses) to build audience segments, suppress ads, or create lookalike audiences on advertising platforms

5. Disclosing your information

Your personal information may be shared with:

  • Third-party service providers supporting marketing, analytics, advertising, events, or surveys
  • Contractors and agencies helping UTS with recruitment and engagement campaigns

  • Regulators or authorities where required or permitted by law

Some service providers may process data outside Australia. Where data is transferred internationally, we take steps such as contractual protections to safeguard your information in accordance with applicable privacy requirements.

6. How long we keep your information

Information is retained only as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes for which it was collected, or as required under legal and regulatory record-keeping obligations, for example the State Records Act 1998 (NSW).

You have the right to:

  • Request access to and correction of personal information we hold about you
  • Ask us to stop or restrict certain processing activities
  • Request deletion of your information (where permitted)
  • Object to certain processing activities, including marketing
  • Make a complaint about how we have handled your information

You can unsubscribe from marketing emails at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link in our communications. If you receive SMS marketing messages, you can opt out by replying STOP or using the instructions provided in the message. You may still receive non-marketing messages relevant to your relationship with UTS, such as event confirmations or application updates.
