Teaching and Learning
UTS is a signatory to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which includes a commitment to providing students with the knowledge, skills, & capability to understand & address the SDGs, relevant to their chosen discipline. In addition, a key goal of the UTS Sustainability Strategy is for our students to graduate as responsible citizens with the ability to accelerate the transition to a sustainable future.
To support students in this, UTS has committed to embedding discipline-relevant sustainability capabilities within the Course Intended Learning Outcomes for every course across UTS. This means that students will be supported through learning activities to understand how sustainability practices impact their discipline, and how they can make positive impacts around sustainability, which is then measured through assessment to evidence the development of these capabilities.
Over the next two years, every course at UTS will undertake an accelerated comprehensive course review in partnership with the curriculum design team to enhance curriculum, including ensuring sustainability related capabilities are included in the Course Intended Learning Outcomes.
Sustainability Modules
UTS recognises the importance of embedding sustainability into the curriculum in order to prepare graduates, whatever their field, for careers of the future. A Sustainability Module is available on Canvas Commons to assist teaching staff to embed sustainability into their subject. The module offers ready-to-go materials and activities on sustainability concepts and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The resources are available to be reused, adapted and shared.
A Sustainability Training Module is available to all staff through NEO. The module includes an introduction to sustainability and the SDGs, governance of sustainability at UTS including our Climate Positive Plan, and what UTS is doing to build a more sustainable world through research, education and operations and by facilitating innovation and collaborating with partners.
TD Electives
Through the Transdisciplinary (TD) Electives Program, all UTS undergraduate students engage with complex social and environmental challenges as part of their core degree.
Working across disciplines and with industry, community and government partners, students develop systems thinking, creativity and sustainability capabilities while exploring real-world issues aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This award-winning program helps students become ethical, socially responsible and effective changemakers.
Bachelor of Sustainability and Environment
The Bachelor of Sustainability and Environment is a distinctive transdisciplinary program that equips students with the knowledge and practical skills to address complex environmental, social and economic challenges.
Offered as a double degree, it combines sustainability expertise with disciplinary study from a wide range of fields including business, science and engineering, preparing graduates to drive positive change across industries and sectors.
Students develop systems thinking, problem-solving and collaboration skills that are highly valued in a rapidly changing world.
