June 2022 marked the first ever UTS Tech Festival. The main objective: to celebrate the hard work, talent, and success of our students.

Over the years, the program of events has grown exponentially, now featuring an array of showcases, hackathons, competitions and interactive workshops that encourage students to tap into their creativity.

Tech Festival is powered by the Faculty of Engineering and IT, with the support and collaboration of industry partners and student groups.

How did Tech Festival come about?

The UTS Tech Festival provided an opportunity to bring our community together to celebrate the talents and achievements of our students.

In hosting the UTS Tech Festival, the Faculty of Engineering and IT hopes to inspire both current and future students to continue developing the skills necessary for a successful future career.

Over the course of two weeks, students have the chance to solve real-world problems and immerse themselves in an environment of innovation and teamwork.

Standout Events

Showcases - AI, Games, Robotics, Software, Cybersecurity, Civil and Environmental Engineering

Known as the pinnacle events of the Tech Festival, our discipline showcases allow academics, students and their family and friends to come together and celebrate the innovative work of our faculty students.

Students showcase their projects and achievements in Artificial Intelligence, Games, Robotics, Software, Cybersecurity and Civil and Environmental Engineering across 5 jam-packed nights on campus. The showcases see teams of students present a project to academics and industry experts, allowing for live feedback and discussion, with prizes up for grabs for the most outstanding projects.

By participating in the showcase, students gain valuable experience in presenting their ideas to a broader audience. It also serves as an opportunity for organisations to network with our high achieving students and be part of celebrating their success.

Hackathons

Tech Festival student hackathons provide students with unique and meaningful learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom. Over 48 intense hours, students work in teams to tackle everyday challenges, unlocking new possibilities and insights along the way.

Hackathons aim to:

  • Provide students with exposure to real-world problems

  • Create an environment that encourages out-of-the-box solutions

  • Engage with industry in a low-pressure context

These events are hosted in collaboration with our incredible industry partners, who mentor students throughout the two day experience.

Each year, the iOS Hackathon pushes students to unlock their creativity as they are tasked with designing an iOS application from scratch. No grades, no job expectations – just a chance to have fun, meet new people, and learn new skills.

The hackathon aims to expose students to the latest iOS development frameworks and connect them with the industry experts behind the iOS apps we use daily, highlighting the true potential of a career in the app development sector.

Awards Night

Each year, as Tech Festival draws to a close, we gather the Engineering and IT community to recognise the most exceptional student achievements at the Awards Night.

From groundbreaking projects to innovative tech solutions, we recognise the talent and dedication of our students. It's a night of inspiration and celebration, honouring their hard work and contributions to shaping the future of engineering and technology.
