What did you do before you started your course?
I studied a Bachelor of Forensic Biology in Biomedical Science
What motivated you to study this degree/major?
I always had an interest in science and a fascination with the how crimes were investigated and that is why I chose my original degree. When I heard about this honours course it was an obvious choice as I could turn my interests into a possible career path and stand out from the crowd of people with similar degrees to mine.
What do you enjoy most about your degree?
I love the fact that after learning all there is from my degree I get to study and investigate what is interesting to me. In addition to this, my honours research may actually make a difference in the scientific field.
Why did you choose to study at UTS?
My choices were limited as there are few forensics degrees available, however I chose UTS Science simply because it seemed so new, the buildings and work areas were light and open providing a real inviting space which is particularly important as science has more contact hours than other degrees.
Also, after attending four open days for various unis around Sydney, the vibe of the UTS campus really stood out for me. Because the campus is located right near the heart of the city and is quite compact there is always something happening and you never have to go far whether you want to get food, go shopping, to a bar or relax in a park.
As a result of the great experience I had during undergrad I decided to stay at UTS.
What is it like to study at UTS Science?
The environment at UTS is truly great, particularly now that construction has been completed. UTS now has three new buildings (one particularly for science) so there are plenty of quiet areas to study. And the new large grassed area in the middle of the campus is perfect for getting sun while waiting for your next class or meeting. The vibe, the new campus and the content of science degrees really come together to create an awesome experience.
Is there any advice you would give to students studying this degree?
This degree can be tough at times with all the contact hours and assessments, but just stick with it and make sure you take time to relax and hang out with friends.
What would you like to do once you complete by your degree?
I am hoping to get a job with the Australian Federal Police or another of the police agencies that caters for both my science background and my passion for forensics. A second option would be to work in a science lab and rely on the biomedical knowledge that I have gathered.
What other activities do you participate/do at uni?
While completing my original degree I had the opportunity to volunteer for an investigation on an Egyptian mummy that appeared on the ABC program ‘Catalyst’. I also was involved in a program called ‘Peer in Pracs’ that help first year students integrate into the university.
