Diploma in Languages (Japanese)
Why I chose UTS
I chose to study Communications at UTS based on the fact that it is the best communications university in the country. I originally started at UTS as a journalism student, however discovered a year into my degree that it wasn’t what I saw myself doing for the rest of my life. I chose to switch to advertising as it satisfies my vast imagination, creativity and outgoing nature in a professional, structured and business-minded environment.
Throughout my degree, I have thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on and practical approach UTS takes to studying. From the ever-stressful News Day to university-endorsed internships, practical experience has been the most rewarding and enjoyable part of my degree. I would most definitely recommend UTS’ Public Communications and Advertising courses to prospective students due to the hands-on experience you are provided with.
Why add a Diploma in Languages?
The opportunity to take a language alongside your course (any course!) is (as far as I know) almost exclusive to UTS and is not only an invaluable addition to any resume but also an incredible experience to delve into a foreign culture and step out of your comfort zone! It’s great brain exercise!
I chose to add the Diploma in Languages to my studies not only to experience another culture but also to put myself in a better position career-wise. I love Japanese language and culture so much and it is one of the greatest academic (and career) choices I have made thus far. Learning a language opens up a whole new world of opportunity for graduates. For me, learning Japanese gives me the option to one-day work for an advertising agency in Japan.
Having the opportunity to study alongside students from other faculties is a very rewarding aspect of studying a Diploma in Languages. You are immersed in a totally different setting to your regular communications tutorials and have access to a different wealth of networks and resources.
What I’ve gained from my studies
Since beginning my studies at UTS, I have become so passionate about learning. I am very confident in my ability to contribute to the academic conversation of my field and those of others. I am constantly pushing myself to learn more through reading, listening and witnessing. I owe almost all of my passion for and dedication to gender equality, human rights, community engagement and social activism to my studies. This passion for learning is one of the greatest personal attributes I have gained through my studies. Tertiary education is an invaluable opportunity (needless to say human RIGHT) and I hope that one day I can receive my PhD.
Professional experience through internships
Studying at UTS has taught me the skills necessary to be an effective contributor and efficient worker in a professional setting. During my time here I have had the opportunity to undertake several internships, including at on-campus radio station 2Ser 107.5 FM, online lifestyle guide Urban Society and at the Inner West Courier.
I would advise prospective students to make the most of the networks that are opened up to you via tutors and lecturers, and to complete as many internships as possible. Working in an actual advertising firm allows you to apply and perfect the skills and knowledge you’ve learnt through out your degree.
