Interior upgrade of Building 4 reaches the final stretch
February 2017
It has taken more than two years, transformed dozens of staff and student spaces, and accounted for thousands of man hours, but finally the interior refurbishment of Building 4 is all but complete.
The major overhaul, which began in late 2014, represents a major investment in the Science Building’s facilities, which have progressively been refurbished to equal the standard set by its next-door neighbour, Building 7.
A new staff meeting room on level 5
Final project
Following delivery of a level 7 staff workspace in late January, only one project remains – installation of a new chiller, plus air-handling units. Installation work is anticipated to be complete by the end of February 2017.
Completed spaces
The top-to-toe refurbishment has seen a multitude of new spaces delivered progressively on levels 3 to 7 – from seminar rooms, computer labs and other learning spaces to new open-plan staff workspaces on levels 5, 6 and 7 and specialist research labs for everything from tissue culture to fish. Along the way it has thrown up a number of surprises and challenges, which have kept the project team on its toes.
Thanks to Science
While refurbishing an occupied building is not easy for staff or students, the cooperation of UTS’s Faculty of Science has never waned. Thanks are owed to the faculty, particularly to those staff who relocated (some more than once!) to accommodate the works. We hope the many exciting new spaces prove a just reward.
