Science Laboratories
Forensic Laboratories
The Forensic Laboratory has various specialised instruments available for applications such as fibre analysis, finger marks detection, chemical trace analysis (inc. paint, fibres, glass, fire and explosive residues), drug analysis and microscopy analysis.
Microstructural Analysis Unit
The Microstructural Analysis Unit (MAU) includes comprehensive array of analytical microscopy tools as well as materials characterisation and fabrication. The MAU can provide advice and analysis in the areas of:
- measurement and testing
- materials evaluation and microcharacterisation
- chemical and forensic analysis
- failure, metallurgical and corrosion analysis
- biomaterials analysis
Instrumentation includes:
- High resolution SEM (scanning electron microscope) imaging
- Standard SEM imaging and elemental analysis - elemental mapping available using EDS (energy dispersive spectroscopy)
- Variable and extended pressure SEM imaging (SEM imaging of hydrated specimens in their natural state, SEM imaging of insulating specimens without coating)
- X-ray diffraction (XRD) - powder and thin film samples, compound identification, structural phase ID
Analytical Laboratories
The Analytical laboratories can cater to a range of analytical questions ranging from structural identification and elucidation to the elemental composition of samples. Instrumentation includes:
- Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy
- Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS)
- Quadrupole Time of Flight-Mass Spectrometry (QTOF-MS)
- Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS)
- High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
- Capillary Electrophoresis (CE)
Materials Laboratories
The Materials laboratories provide support for characterisation of physical samples. Instrumentation includes:
- Thermogravimetric Analyser TA Instruments SDT 2960 (TG-DTA)
- Thermomechanical Analyser TA Instruments TMA 2930 (TMA)
- Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC)
- SETARAM (TGA-DSC)
