• What ATAR do I need to get into IT at UTS?

  Admission to UTS Information Technology is based on your selection rank (ATAR + adjustment factors), which varies by course and year. Entry is competitive, as ranks depend on available places and applicant demand. 

  
  You can also complete the UTS Engineering and IT Portfolio (Year 12) questionnaire to demonstrate your strong motivation to study engineering. If you fall short of the Selection Rank by 1–3 points, we will still consider your application.

• Can I apply for an IT course without an ATAR?

  Yes, there are several pathways to study Information Technology at UTS. You can begin with a UTS College Diploma of Information Technology, which provides direct entry into Year 2 of an IT undergraduate degree if you achieve the required grade point average (GPA).   You can also enter via VET or TAFE studies, which may count toward your degree through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Learn more about admissions and pathways.

• If I change my mind, can I change my major or transfer to another course?

  Yes. If you change your mind, you can apply for a course transfer within UTS. You will receive credit for completed subjects that are shared between courses and start in your new program in the next available session.

• Are there opportunities for students to work on real world industry projects in their course?

  Yes, senior year students studying the Bachelor of Information Technology at UTS have the opportunity to work on industry projects through the Software Development Studio. Students learn with real industrial tools, participate in development-focused roles, and build software as part of a design-driven workflow, all while receiving mentorship from industry professionals.

• Can I study sub-majors in my course?

  The availability of a number of sub-majors for IT varies by course. You can find out more about the course you're interested in through the UTS handbook.

• How is Information Technology different from Software Engineering at UTS?

  The Bachelor of Information Technology is a three-year degree that develops practical IT skills in networking, databases, information systems, cybersecurity, cloud technologies and web development.

  
  Meanwhile, the UTS Bachelor of Engineering (Software) is a four-year degree accredited by Engineers Australia, designed for students who want to become professional software engineers. It focuses on engineering mathematics, software architecture, systems design and large-scale software development.

  Yes, we have a few programs that have been designed in partnership with leading organisations.

• Does UTS have programs and scholarships to support women in IT?

  UTS offers the Women in Engineering and IT Cooperative Scholarship and the Women in Engineering and IT Faculty Scholarship, each offering unique benefits including potential industry placements, differing financial support and durations.

• How many IT intakes does UTS have each year?

  UTS has two main IT intakes per year, which are the Autumn session (February) and Spring session (July). Intake availability can vary depending on the IT course or major. Please check our course page for the latest intake dates and entry requirements.

• Can I change my course after classes have commenced?

  Yes, it may be possible to switch between IT courses at UTS if you meet the required eligibility, such as completing a certain number of subjects and achieving the minimum GPA (grade point average) or WAM (weighted average mark). However, you should speak to your course coordinator and check the UTS Handbook to review your new study plan and subject availability to avoid delaying your graduation.

• Are there flexible study options for the bachelor's degree?

  Flexible study options are available for domestic students, however this varies by course. For programs that are co-designed and in collaboration with industry partners, such as the Bachelor of IT (Co-op) and IDeA cadetship, students are required to study full-time and complete the program within three years.

  
  Students who choose to enrol in the Diploma of Industry Practice will complete an extra year consisting of two six-month internships during their course.

  
  If you’re an international student on a student visa, you must maintain a full-time study load. If you want to study part-time, apply for permission to reduce your study load.

• What is the UTS Information Technology Honours?

  UTS Information Technology offers outstanding graduates a stepping stone into a research career via our Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours) program. You'll have the opportunity to become an active player in the knowledge economy and to work on research that matters. Research areas include decision systems and e-service intelligence, next generation IT services, and mobile technologies.

• Am I eligible to study Information Technology Honours?

  Applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree in information technology, equivalent to the UTS Bachelor of Information Technology, with a minimum weighted average mark of 65. Admission is subject to the approval of the honours program coordinator and is dependent on the availability of appropriate academic supervision within the University.

• When does the Information Technology Honours start?

  You can start honours in either Autumn (February) or Spring (July) session.

• How is honours assessed?

  You'll complete a preparatory subject, a research methodology subject, four elective subjects relevant to your area of research, and a research project.

• How do I find a research topic and supervisor for the Honours program?

  Honours projects on offer are varied and multidisciplinary. You can either define your own topic or choose an area of interest and then, with the help of your supervisor, determine a problem to be solved or investigated in that area.

• What other further study options are offered?

  Honours is a springboard into a higher degree by research.

• Can I defer my study?

  Whether you can defer depends on several factors. Some courses do not allow you to defer, and you cannot defer if you commence your course in the Spring or Summer session.

• Is it possible to study part time?

  Domestic applicants can study part time by enrolling in a less than full-time study load. Visit study load for more information.

  If you’re an international student on a student visa, you must maintain a full-time study load. If you want to study part time, apply for permission to reduce your study load.

• I have a previous qualification in a different field – will this support my application?

  If you have studied a previous qualification, it can be considered for admissions purposes. Visit admissions and eligibility for more information.

• Can I transfer to UTS from a different university?

  Yes, although you will need to apply. Application information is available for domestic applicants and international applicants.

  If you transfer to UTS, you may be able to receive credit towards your new course based on your previous study through recognition of prior learning (RPL).

• Can I study a UTS subject if I’m a student at another university?

  Yes, although you will need to apply. If you’re studying at a different university, cross-institutional study allows you to enrol in UTS subjects and receive credit for them towards your course.
