• Is transdisciplinarity a new discipline or approach?

  A transdisciplinary approach isn’t necessarily new, but its differences and strengths lie in viewing the world and subsequent challenges in a more connected and complete way.

• Why is transdisciplinary research important?

  Transdisciplinary research is crucial for tackling complex problems like climate change, poverty and public health issues. These problems require holistic approaches that consider diverse perspectives, knowledge and expertise.

• How does transdisciplinarity differ from other mainstream approaches, such as interdisciplinarity and multidisciplinarity?

  Multidisciplinarity involves multiple disciplines working independently on different aspects of a problem. Interdisciplinarity involves integrating methods and theories from different disciplines to address a problem. Transdisciplinarity goes further by involving stakeholders from outside academia and integrating their perspectives to co-produce knowledge and solutions. 

• Isn’t all research the same?

  No, there are many types of research approaches. Transdisciplinary research is a more modern, fresh approach that integrates knowledge from a diverse range of academic and non-academic disciplines. It draws in perspectives and expertise from industry, community and First Nations and considers the interconnectedness of various factors affecting or causing the challenge or issue being researched.

• What are some examples of transdisciplinary research?

  Examples include sustainability science, public health initiatives and environmental studies where researchers work with communities, policymakers and other stakeholders to address complex issues.

• I have a challenge within my organisation or community. How do I know if it’s ‘complex’ enough?

• How are research projects usually funded?

  Research projects can be funded through various sources, each with its own criteria and processes. Here are some common ways research projects are typically funded:

  • fully funded by an industry partner
  • fully funded through a government grant, philanthropic donation or private foundation/trust
  • co-funded by an industry partner and a third party.
  • co-funded by an industry partner and/or third party and/or UTS (in-kind).
