About us

The UTS Telecom Research Unit (TRU) is a one-of-a-kind, industry-focused research team dedicated to enhancing telecommunications capability in Australia and beyond.

Led by Industry Professor Ray Owen, the TRU team works in partnership with the telecommunications industry. We deliver research expertise, capacity building and professional development opportunities across four key areas.

  • Research and development

Through innovation, applied research and industry collaboration, we drive advances in telecommunications technologies to uplift Australia’s digital capability. Our partners also benefit from access to UTS’s world-class research facilities, including the UTS TechLab industry research hub and the Data Arena visualisation environment.

  • Industry-led teaching and internships

Empowering students with cutting-edge, industry-relevant skills and experience is key to growing Australia’s domestic telecommunications workforce. All our partnerships include dedicated internships that connect partners with a talent pipeline of work-ready graduates.

  • Industry and graduate education

The telecommunications sector is evolving rapidly. Through microcredentials, in-person learning, podcasts and other immersive opportunities, we provide targeted professional education that helps our partners keep pace with change.

  • STEM diversity and inclusion

Building a more inclusive engineering profession is a priority for the TRU, our partners and the sector at large. Via structured UTS initiatives like the Women in Engineering and IT program, we build inclusive student cohorts that increase the diversity of Australia’s graduate workforce.

Home of the National Telecom Resilience Centre

The TRU is home to the National Telecom Resilience Centre (NTRC), an Australian-first initiative established in partnership with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts (DICTRCSA).

Launched in early 2025, the NTRC will address the critical resilience of the Australia’s national telecommunications network and emergency call ecosystem. It aims to deliver more robust and reliable services for all Australians.
