As a UTS student you have the right to appeal against certain administrative and academic decisions taken by the university.

You can make an appeal about the following:

Fees

Has something gone wrong with your fees? You can make an appeal about:

  • your enrolment being cancelled after not paying your fees
  • not being given a refund of tuition fees or a deposit
  • having to pay a late fee for overdue tuition fees.

How do I appeal or find out my options?

Submit an enquiry through Ask UTS. Payment information also includes information about generating eInvoice, payment methods, hardship and special circumstances.

Academic results and academic progress

You can appeal decisions about:

  • being excluded from your course following unsatisfactory academic progress  (refer Academic progression)
  • your final subject grade (refer Request a review of a result: Appeal process).

How do I appeal or find out my options?

If you have been excluded from a course you can appeal against exclusion within 20 working days of the date of notification of the decision. There are different processes to follow depending on your situation (refer Exclusion).

To query an individual mark or grade, or the final mark for a subject, email your subject coordinator within 5 working days of the release of the assessment task or final result for the subject. If you’re not satisfied after this process, you can escalate the query to the responsible academic officer. Refer Request a review of a result.

Student misconduct

Student misconduct includes cheating, inappropriate behaviour, bullying, plagiarism and fraud.

How do I appeal or find out my options?

Appeals of misconduct decisions made in accordance with UTS Rules are managed by the UTS Governance Support Unit.

If the allegation of student misconduct is proven, you will be notified in writing about how you can appeal.

Cancellation or suspension of enrolment

UTS has the right to cancel or suspend your enrolment in some circumstances, including:

  • failure to maintain satisfactory academic progress (as described in Academic results and academic progress above)
  • failure to pay tuition fees (refer Understanding fees)
  • student misconduct (as described in Student misconduct above)

How do I appeal or find out my options?

As outlined above, there are different processes to follow for cancellation or suspension of enrolment (refer Exclusion) and student misconduct, depending on your situation.

I’m an international student, what about my visa status?

If you’re an international student and your enrolment is cancelled or suspended, UTS must report this to the Department of Home Affairs. If your enrolment is cancelled due to poor academic performance and you appeal, you cannot be reported to the Department of Home Affairs while your appeal is being considered and until any external appeal processes have been exhausted.

To determine your visa status, you will need to contact the Department of Home Affairs.

You can appeal a decision about cancelling or suspending your enrolment. By law, you must be given 20 working days from notice of cancellation to lodge your appeal. Note that you may not be permitted to enrol in classes while your appeal is being considered.

For more advice about visa implications, visit Information for international students.
