• What ATAR do I need to get into IT at UTS?

  Admission to UTS Information Technology is based on your selection rank (ATAR + adjustment factors), which varies by course and year. Entry is competitive, as ranks depend on available places and applicant demand. 

  
  You can also complete the UTS Engineering and IT Portfolio (Year 12) questionnaire to demonstrate your strong motivation to study engineering. If you fall short of the Selection Rank by 1–3 points, we will still consider your application.

• Can I apply for an IT Course without an ATAR?

  Yes, there are several pathways to study Information Technology at UTS. You can begin with a UTS College Diploma of Information Technology, which provides direct entry into Year 2 of an IT undergraduate degree if you achieve the required grade point average (GPA). • Are there courses that provide practical experience in Information Systems through real enterprise project work?

  The Bachelor of Information Technology (Co-op) provides sub-major options, which include business information systems management and data analytics. This course is an undergraduate degree that incorporates real enterprise project experience, offering two six-month industry placements and hands-on work-integrated learning projects with industry partners. In this program, students have the option to specialise in sub-majors which include business information systems management, data analytics and more.

• If I'm interested in systems design and analysis what are my undergraduate study options at UTS?

  Students interested in systems design and analysis can pursue the Bachelor of Information Systems, the Bachelor of Information Technology, or the Bachelor of Artificial Intelligence, as all of these include subjects relevant to system planning, development, and management.

  
  These courses teach students how to analyse business needs, design effective information systems, manage data, and implement IT solutions, providing a strong foundation for careers in systems analysis, IT consulting, enterprise architecture, and digital transformation.

• Are there double degree options for the Bachelor of Information Systems?

  Students who are interested in specialising in information systems at UTS can choose from two double-degree options: the Bachelor of Information Systems Bachelor of Business, ideal for careers in business analysis, IT management, and digital transformation, and the Bachelor of Information Systems Bachelor of Sustainability and Environment, suited for roles in environmental technology, smart cities, and sustainability innovation.

• What is the length of a double degree in Information Systems?

  A standard Bachelor of Information Systems at UTS takes three years full-time, while the double-degree options, such as the Bachelor of Information Systems Bachelor of Business or the Bachelor of Information Systems Bachelor of Sustainability and Environment, take four years full-time.

  
  Domestic students have the option to study part-time, which will take six years.

• How can I gain hands-on experience in systems design as a student?

  Students can gain hands-on experience in systems design by joining tech clubs on campus, participating in hackathons, and attending workshops or industry events such as the UTS Tech Festival, where they can work on real-world problems and collaborate with peers. Internships or industry placements also provide practical exposure, allowing students to apply system analysis, design, and project management skills in professional environments, building both technical expertise and industry connections.

• How long does it take to complete the bachelor's degree and are there flexible study options?

  The bachelor's degree offers flexible study options for domestic students - you can choose to study full-time over 3 years or part-time over 6 years. However, the Bachelor of Information Technology (Co-op) and IDeA cadetship programs are only available full-time over 3 years.

  
  If you’re an international student on a student visa, you must maintain a full-time study load. If you want to study part-time, apply for permission to reduce your study load.

• Can i change my course after classes have commenced?

  Yes, it may be possible to switch between IT courses at UTS if you meet the required eligibility, such as completing a certain number of subjects and achieving the minimum GPA (grade point average) or WAM (weighted average mark). However, you should speak to your course coordinator and check the UTS Handbook to review your new study plan and subject availability to avoid delaying your graduation.

• Can I defer my study?

  Whether you can defer depends on several factors. Some courses do not allow you to defer, and you cannot defer if you commence your course in the Spring or Summer session.

• Is it possible to study part time?

  Domestic applicants can study part time by enrolling in a less than full-time study load. Visit study load for more information.

  If you’re an international student on a student visa, you must maintain a full-time study load. If you want to study part time, apply for permission to reduce your study load.

• I have a previous qualification in a different field – will this support my application?

  If you have studied a previous qualification, it can be considered for admissions purposes. Visit admissions and eligibility for more information.

• Can I transfer to UTS from a different university?

  Yes, although you will need to apply. Application information is available for domestic applicants and international applicants.

• Can I study a UTS subject if I’m a student at another university?

  Yes, although you will need to apply. If you’re studying at a different university, cross-institutional study allows you to enrol in UTS subjects and receive credit for them towards your course.
