• Course description

  This course is aimed at both recent graduates and career changers who seek to become secondary school teachers. The degree enables you to gain a postgraduate teaching qualification in just two years, with specialisations in single or combined discipline teaching areas, depending on your prior studies.

  This course will develop your knowledge of educational theory, pedagogy, policy, and curricula and systems relevant to secondary schooling. It will provide you with essential understandings of critical areas, such as Indigenous knowledges, psychology, sociology, inclusive education and digital technologies. You will complete teaching methods subject relating to your single or combined discipline specialisation, and 60 days of professional experience across at least two of our 200+ partner secondary schools throughout NSW.

  The course structure generally also allows for the completion of a range of sought after electives to broaden out your learning. Applicants who have completed most but not all of the required undergraduate specialisation subjects may be approved to undertake up to two additional required subjects as electives.

  This course is a NSW secondary school teaching preparation course and adheres to the subject content knowledge prerequisites as stipulated by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). It is suitable for students about to graduate with a bachelor's degree and for mature-aged graduates who are changing careers and want a teaching qualification. It includes an intensive professional experience program where students spend 60 days in practical experience teaching, and offers extensive, structured and closely supported experiences of secondary school teaching in different settings. The course has the flexibility to enable students who have completed most but not all of the required undergraduate specialisation subjects to undertake the additional required subjects as part of the degree.

  If you’re a domestic student studying teaching, you may be eligible to apply for a Commonwealth government payment to support your prac placements.

• Admission requirements

  To be eligible for admission to this course, applicants must meet the following criteria.

  Applicants must have the following:

  • Completed Australian bachelor's degree, bachelor's honours, master's degree, doctorate, or overseas equivalent, with at least one major discipline study relevant to the teaching area, as described by the NSW curriculum and consistent with NESA Subject Content Knowledge Requirements 

  Students who have studied overseas may be required to meet additional requirements set by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) to qualify as teachers in NSW.

  For applicants with a bachelor's degree, the degree must contain at least one major discipline study and may contain a minor discipline study. A minor discipline study qualifies students to teach a second or additional subject. A major discipline study equates to six subjects, with no more than two subjects at first-year level and no fewer than two subjects at third-year level. A minor discipline study equates to four subjects, with no more than two subjects at the first-year level.

• Domestic course fees

  2026 Indicative tuition fees for government-supported domestic students

  This course offers a limited number of Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP). This means the Australian Government contributes to your education costs, and you pay the remaining tuition fees, known as the student contribution. If eligible, you can defer payment through HECS-HELP, or you can choose to pay your fees upfront each session.  

  CSP applications are reviewed continuously by the university and offered based on merit, so we recommend applying early to be considered. Learn more about applying for a CSP, eligibility and key dates.

  Tuition fees are reviewed annually, with any new rates effective from the beginning of each calendar year. The total indicative tuition fee includes estimated annual increases over the duration of the course.

  • Textbooks, materials, and other course-related costs.

These costs can vary for each person, so it’s important to plan accordingly. Additionally, scholarships are available to help with your living expenses.

• Inherent requirements

  Inherent requirements are academic and non-academic requirements that are essential for successfully completing a course at UTS. You can find the inherent requirements for your course via the inherent requirements directory.

• Professional recognition

  This course is currently accredited by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) as a recognised secondary school teaching qualification. UTS is seeking additional NESA approval for proposed organisational and curriculum variations, to be implemented in Autumn 2027. To gain employment as a teacher in NSW schools, graduands must meet the requirements of the NESA, including language proficiency.

  Commonwealth Supported Places

  There are a limited number of Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) available in this course which are competitive and allocated on merit. To be considered for a CSP, applicants must:

  • Indicate their interest in a CSP on their application.
  • Apply on time in line with CSP deadlines (it is recommended applicants apply early as applications are assessed progressively).
