If you are a teaching, nursing or midwifery student you are eligible to apply for a Commonwealth government payment to support your prac placements.

The payment is designed to provide you with financial support to help you manage the ongoing costs while undertaking mandatory practical placements. 

The initiative aims to enhance student retention, facilitate graduation, and promote entry into the workforce. 

Who is it for?  

Eligible domestic students who are enrolled in teaching, social work, nursing or midwifery courses and placed in mandatory practical placements.  

How much is the payment? 

You can receive up to $331 per week. Payments are considered taxable income.   

Is it means tested? 

Yes, these payments are means tested so they go to students who need it most.  

How does it affect other payments? 

This payment will be available alongside other state and territory initiatives.  

When does it start?

The payment comes into effect on 1 July 2025 and isn’t available retrospectively. 

How do I claim the payment? 

You will need to submit a claim and supporting documents before going on your placement. Information on how to apply will be supplied to students undertaking relevant placements.
