Biomedical Engineering graduate Sabrina’s path to global opportunities.

For Sabrina, a Biomedical Engineering degree was the perfect intersection of her two great interests: medicine and physics.

Her decision to study at UTS was confirmed after attending an Open Day, where the genuine care and enthusiasm of the academics stood out. 

But it wasn’t until she started her degree that Sabrina fully appreciated the scope and opportunities in biomedical engineering; from medical 3D printing and mechatronics to clinical roles and research. 

“I was able to find my own passion and build my own pathway, especially with my Engineering capstone.”

Driven to do more 

After studying a year in lockdown, Sabrina was excited to jump into the university life with purpose.  

“There are so many opportunities at UTS. I first worked as a student ambassador, then as an outreach assistant supporting first-year students to transition into university life.” 

As time progressed, Sabrina quickly recognised the value of industry experience to building her biomedical career and was eager to take initiative. She completed five internships, the first with a startup working on a robotic lung alongside two engineering capstone students. 

“I was eager to apply what I was learning. Internships really gave me that opportunity.”

Creating opportunities for others 

Sabrina didn’t stop at building her own experience, she wanted to help her peers too. She co-founded the UTS Biomedical Engineering Society, where they host networking events and share internship opportunities with fellow students. 

“It’s something I’m really proud of as I get to support other students to gain industry experience and grow their biomedical careers.” 

Global outlook 

Despite a packed schedule, Sabrina also made time for international exchange programs in Berlin and Nottingham. With graduation on the horizon, she’s taking a well-deserved gap year before launching into her next big adventure, hopefully globally. 

“I think I caught the travel bug. I’m hoping to land a biomedical engineering job in London or somewhere in Europe.”

With her passion, experience, and global mindset, it’s clear Sabrina is ready to make her mark in the world of biomedical engineering.
