Through hands-on projects, Vaibhav applied engineering principles to real-world problems.

Growing up in central India, Vaibhav always wanted to pursue a Masters of Structural Engineering.

Seeking an education which combines the technical and management sides of engineering, Vaibhav found UTS’ Master of Engineering Master of Engineering Management degree.

"The combination of technical and management knowledge is crucial to me because civil engineering projects require both a strong understanding of the technical aspects and the ability to effectively manage resources, timelines, and teams."

Master of Engineering Master of Engineering Management – Structural Engineering

"While technical skills are essential for problem-solving, management knowledge helps me navigate the complexities of project delivery, budgeting, and communication. Having both sets of skills allows me to contribute to a project from both a technical and strategic perspective, ensuring it’s completed efficiently and successfully.”

Building connections

To network with industry professionals and better understand the job application process, Vaibhav attended events hosted by UTS Careers.

“One of the most valuable events I attended was the International Student & Alumni Connect. This event allowed me to connect with alumni who had been international students themselves but have since established their careers in the industry. These events gave me a clearer understanding of what employers are looking for in candidates, from technical skills to soft skills like communication and teamwork. I gained valuable insights into the types of qualities and experience that make a candidate stand out, helping me better prepare for job applications and interviews.”

Learning by doing

Vaibhav credits UTS with giving him the strong foundation in both the technical and practical sides of engineering. Through hands-on projects, he learned to apply engineering principles to real-world problems. These experiences taught him teamwork and skills that would translate directly into the workplace and make him stand out amongst the applicant pool during his job hunt.

“One key example was my Graduate Project on Building Information Modelling (BIM), which I was working on at the time of my interview with Acciona. When I brought up BIM during the interview, the interviewer seemed particularly impressed, as it’s a key tool in modern civil engineering projects for improving efficiency and collaboration.”

Today, Vaibhav is a graduate Civil Engineer at Acciona Australia in Sydney. He recently worked on the new section of the Sydney Metro which included managing operations of the Tunnel Boring Machines to carving tunnels for the system and concrete pours.
