Taskira’s journey to a successful Engineering career.

Hailing from Magura, Bangladesh, Taskira Islam graduated from UTS in 2017 with a Master of Engineering (Extension) in Environmental Engineering. In 2021, she became a Traffic Engineering Officer at Transport NSW.

Taskira had a lifelong desire to study abroad for her higher education degrees. With the guidance of her family, she chose Sydney to follow that dream and pursue a Master of Engineering in Environmental Engineering at UTS.

“I found UTS had a good, accessible location, technical courses, and was more valuable in the job market.”

“My education and knowledge of environment, transport and traffic allowed me to kick off my career as an Engineer in Infrastructure & Environment with Liverpool City Council and has helped see me through to my current role as a Traffic Engineering Officer with Transport for NSW.”

Taskira especially enjoyed the practical nature of her coursework. Many of her classes involved site visits where she witnessed the real-world application of her studies.

“For most of my core studies like green technologies, decentralised water, environmental risk assessment, we visited the sites and facilities to see how they worked and the consequences on the environment. We visited the landfill waste water treatment system at Sydney Olympic Park, and learned about the recycling processes. We also visited newly built houses in Newtown that were upgraded with sustainable technology and utilised renewable energy.”

My name is Taskira Islam, and I'm from Magura, but I've raised and brought in Chittagong, which is a port city in Bangladesh.

My current job title is Traffic Engineering Officer and I'm working for Transport for New South Wales.

I did my Masters in Civil and Environmental Engineering. There are so many reasons which compelled me to study this subject. One of the reasons was to protect the environment. If you study this subject, there are a wide range of careers you can choose from. And if you are interested in science, technology and engineering, I think you should pursue this subject.

My most memorable experience as a student was the site visits we did often. We were offered a site visit to Olympic Park. There was a solid waste management factory, so we got a chance to see how actually it works. We studied the water purification waste management. It was really fun.

I was involved with UTS Bangladeshi societies, and I was also involved with the photographic lab in UTS. I met so many friends and it enhanced my ability to network. And it helped me to get a job very quickly.

I got a friend and he actually explained that government agencies offer internships for students or job placement. It's a very good opportunity to grab for a student. And yeah, through my peer networking and my friend, I got an internship as a project engineer in Liverpool City Council. That internship was very helpful and it actually shows me the path and explore more about my career.

Aside from her studies, Taskira sought out professional opportunities via UTS networking events, job fairs, and conferences. She regularly applied to job listings on council websites which is how she landed her first job after graduation.

“My education and knowledge of environment, transport, and traffic allowed me to kick off my career as an Engineer in Infrastructure & Environment with Liverpool City Council and has helped see me through to my current role as a Traffic Engineering Officer with Transport for NSW.”

At Transport NSW, Taskira is tasked with improving road safety and networks which includes traffic management, site investigations, and technical assessments.
