What you’ll study

You can complete this postgraduate qualification in two years part-time. Within this program, you’ll complete five core subjects to build critical knowledge of theories about multilingual learners and language, and teaching methodologies and their practical applications.

You’ll also develop specialist knowledge to begin your career in the adult and vocational education sector, schools sector or the private and overseas English language teaching sectors to teach English as an additional language, literacy and/or numeracy.

You’ll need to choose a specialist stream aligned with the sector in which you wish to work. These are teaching literacy, numeracy and English as an additional language in adult and vocational education colleges; teaching English as an additional language or dialect in primary or secondary schools; and teaching English to international students. You‘ll work with current industry tools such as curricula and assessment frameworks used in your specialist field, to plan and apply sequences of lessons and assessments for diverse groups of learners.

You’ll gain firsthand insight in your chosen field by undertaking one or both of your practicum placements in your chosen sector. As you progress to the later stages of the course, you’ll be able to choose an elective to extend your knowledge in contemporary topics in TESOL and applied linguistics.

The course features flexible study options, with classes aimed to be held at times suitable for students working standard full-time hours. Credit recognition may be available if you are already a qualified teacher.
