Prepares you to teach English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D) in primary and secondary schools. Equip yourself to help primary and secondary students develop English language skills, enabling them to participate fully in school life and learning and out-of-school contexts.

Overview

With increasing linguistic and cultural diversity in Australian schools, teachers need specialised skills to support students learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D). This stream equips you to work effectively with multilingual learners in both primary and secondary school settings. You’ll gain pedagogical knowledge and practical skills to support multilingual learners in primary and secondary school settings to access the curriculum and succeed academically.

Through supervised practicum placements, you’ll apply your learning in real classrooms, gaining experience in designing and delivering responsive programs that meet the needs of EAL/D students. The stream supports both pre-service and in-service teachers seeking to specialise in EAL/D education.

Please note that to become a teacher of English as an additional language or dialect in an Australian school, you must already hold an Australian recognised teaching qualification.
