Choose from three specialised streams

The course enables students to specialise in one of three streams.

  1. Teaching adults literacy, numeracy and English. Graduates teach adults in adult and vocational education colleges who are developing their English language, literacy and/ or numeracy skills for personal, social and further education and employment purposes.
  2. Teaching English for academic purposes.  Graduates teach students for whom English is an additional language who are studying or seeking to study tertiary courses in institutions where English is the medium of instruction, overseas or in Australia.
  3. Teaching English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D) and literacy in schools. Graduates  work in Australia or overseas to teach English language and literacy to primary or secondary school EAL/D students. Candidates for this stream must be qualified primary or secondary school teachers.

Broaden your teaching career opportunities

Add a specialism in English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D) and literacy, adult literacy and numeracy teaching or teaching academic English.

Our teachers have a breadth of experience - be it teaching overseas, academic English, literacy and numeracy in the adult education field or overseas aid work. All of the full-time teachers are active researchers, published authors and internationally recognised experts in the field.

"The highlight of my Master of TESOL and Applied Linguistics was learning from world renowned professionals in the field. Small class sizes gave me access to experts like Distinguished Professor Alistair Pennycook and Dr Keiko Yasukawa. The flexibility of the course, including evening and online classes, meant that I was able to work full-time whilst completing the Master program. The breadth of the course - covering courses from pronunciation, and grammar, to the critical approaches to the global spread of English - kept me interested and engaged in my studies.

Since completing the Master of Applied Linguistics and TESOL program, I have worked in remote Aboriginal communities in Arnhem Land, teaching literacy and numeracy to community members, as well as teaching workplace skills to inmates at a Correctional Centre. My learnings about adult literacy and numeracy from the UTS program supported me through these challenging positions. I have since moved into secondary teaching."

"Doing this course has greatly contributed to my professional career. It was not only the knowledge gained but also the connections I made during my studies. The academics at UTS are experts in their field and I often see them at conferences and industry network events. It was also through connections made during my studies that I was able to get my current role as a Literacy Teacher at TAFE NSW.

UTS is a great place to study and the Applied Linguistics and TESOL course has so much to offer – variety of subjects, flexible delivery modes, contemporary topics, and supportive academic staff. I would highly recommend this course to others (and I have)."

"The course delivery was extremely helpful; studying and working can be a challenge, but the flexibility of the subject delivery was excellent. The subjects were also high quality and were delivered in really innovative ways. There was a lot of group work and discovery learning which was really powerful.

The course provides a really achievable pathway for attainment and can be completed while working full time."
