Engineering and IT should not be limited by gender

Founded in 1981, Women in Engineering and IT is a program of the Faculty of Engineering and IT at the University of Technology and Sydney. We achieve our vision by:

  • Collaborating with academic and professional staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students, industry, schools, government and the community
  • Innovating gender equity programs that inspire and engage
  • Creating and sharing new knowledge, and contributing impactful research to inform practices in education and the workplace
  • Building an inclusive community in engineering and IT.

Our team of academic and professional staff, students and volunteers provide opportunities for women and gender-diverse students to engage in engineering and IT throughout their study and careers.

Volunteer for Women in Engineering and IT

Creating engineering and technology solutions needs diverse innovators to design solutions that include the needs of those who are different and similar to us. We are looking for change makers to be part of a movement to break pervasive gender stereotypes and build an inclusive, supportive community.

Being a part of Women in Engineering and IT has made me much more confident, allowed me to meet like-minded people and helped me develop skills through various workshops.

Introducing UTS Women in IT and Engineering

Introducing UTS Women in IT and Engineering transcript

Hello, my name is Ish and I'm the Student Engagement

00:05

Officer at the Women in Engineering and IT at

00:08

UTS. Our vision is to create and lead social change so that study

00:14

and career journeys are not limited by gender. Some of our

00:17

programs include primary and high school outreach,

00:20

scholarships, and Lucy mentoring.

00:24

Now you're going to hear a little bit more about our

00:25

programmes for that limited engineering and it community.

00:32

I'm currently in my third year of the Women in Engineering and IT

00:36

Cooperative Scholarship in Software Engineering. And what

00:38

that means is I have an industry placement every year closer with

00:44

a company that is part of the programme and this has given me

00:49

an insight as to how I can articulate my classroom based

00:52

learning I guess, with the industry. That's a really good

00:57

program because it allowed me to connect

01:00

the industry, as well as understand or the different

01:04

opportunities out

01:05

there after I finish University.

01:11

In this program you get paired up with a mentor and for 20

01:18

weeks,

01:19

I was able to connect with an industry professional from my

01:23

field of study. So I got to learn about the professional

01:26

workplace, expand my knowledge about the opportunities I have

01:30

and connect with more people to to gain those opportunities and

01:35

improve myself professionally and personally.

01:40

In terms of outreach programmes, I've been out to visit many high

01:43

schools and help students learn about topics from electrical

01:47

engineering to solve panels to even just the basic mechanics of

01:52

engineering and seeing their excitement of getting to be

01:56

doing hands on programmes of engineering stuff that we do

01:59

here. You Let's see, it's been so exciting and rewarding. So

02:02

you really get the chance to develop your leadership and

02:05

communication skills and work with a lot of like minded

02:08

people. And that has been really great for me because I've been

02:12

able to relate on

02:13

top of the students my qhdc experience, and it's kind of

02:17

been an opportunity for me to,

02:20

like, tell what I would tell my younger self to someone else.

02:26

You know, I've been coming to it ever since I was in first year

02:29

and it's been a really good community and I know that I'm

02:33

safe and I know I have support around me with my arm, you know,

02:36

with the people involved with it with other students as well.

02:39

I've met a lot of my friends through that and you know, has

02:43

really gave me that safeguard coming into UTS. As a first year

02:46

student, you know, straight out of high school, I was really

02:49

scared but knowing that there's other women engineers around me

02:53

with the same kind of issues that we're facing in industry

02:56

and also on power going in university. Hundreds of casual

03:01

catch ups every week has been really good.

03:06

I just say just get involved with whatever activities you're

03:10

passionately to to. There's so many and you can't go wrong,

03:14

because if you don't find one, you can just move on to the

03:16

next. The biggest mistake is just not doing anything.

03:20

I would highly recommend coming and joining us here at UTS. And

03:25

I think you'll find that the UTS community and we're ensuring it

03:29

will really support you in exploring your interests, you

03:33

will have the chance to diversify your connection with

03:35

industry. We've had the chance to meet all the women and people

03:39

to work with and there's many opportunities here for you to

03:43

explore your field of interest as well.
