Meet Anubhav – Master of Engineering Extension

It's not just about spending 2 years studying for my master's and then going out. I have been exposed to paths that I could pursue with an understanding of where they would lead me.

That’s an opportunity worth celebrating

Anubhav - Masters in Engineering Extension student

For international student Anubhav, a journey to UTS comprised of not only academics but the opportunity to explore a different culture and the perks that come with travelling to a whole new country and city.

“I studied for my undergrad Engineering degree in my home country, Nepal. I worked for about 3 years after, before I decided to pursue a postgrad degree to specialise in my field. Australia was my first country of choice to study in because I have relatives here, and it made sense to come to a place where I have family. I have enjoyed exploring the country and learning about the diverse cultures here.”

Why a Master of Engineering (Extension) at UTS?

“Once I figured out the country to study in, I made a list of all the unis that offer the course I’m keen on. UTS appeared to be the best choice because of the course flexibility with the master's program. I am able to tailor my course by choosing subjects that I feel align with my interests. I may not always know if my choice is the right choice, a bit of a silent struggle in my mind sometimes, but I don't make a big fuss about it. I just choose whatever feels right to me at the time. At the end of the day, I'm still learning a new skill.

Postgrad successes at UTS

Anubhav has enjoyed favourable outcomes while at UTS; like being awarded a scholarship at the start of his study and being listed on the Dean’s list. Both of which affirm his hardworking nature.

“I received the Postgraduate Academic Excellence scholarship when I applied to the uni, which was the other reason as to why I chose UTS. I was also listed in the Dean's list last semester, which made me feel so proud. It sort of felt like I was giving back to the university for believing in me. I reflect on the journey that was last semester and I know it was hectic. I was adjusting to a new country, getting the hang of things at my new job and adjusting to the new work and study routine. So, the dean’s list reward at the end of it all, was a very beautiful and satisfying feeling.”

Cutting edge learning at UTS

The opportunity to experience cutting-edge learning in his course is a gift for Anubhav. Learning to adopt to new trends that include using artificial intelligence (AI) in engineering is a game changer for him.

We often discuss how we can use generative AI in engineering, because civil engineering doesn’t have to be so traditional in its approach. For my graduate project, I'd wanted to work on something that combines machine learning and civil engineering, geo-technology to be specific. I approached my lecturers to talk to them about my idea and I found a supervisor who works in the field of machine learning and geotechnical engineering. He guided me so well, and I am now finalising my topic in that area. I was not a Geo technical engineer back in Nepal. I slowly developed my interest as I studied at UTS.

A supportive faculty

According to Anubhav, the Faculty of Engineering and IT has provided extensive support in his academic journey. The different departments within the faculty have provided him with numerous opportunities to network and grow in this career through the programs available.

“The professional networking programs and professional talk programs where you get to meet engineers in the field have been eye-opening. You meet individuals with a lifetime worth of experience, some are even close to retiring in this field, so they have a wealth of knowledge to share with you. This kind of support is very good at providing us with a bigger picture of how the field operates. It's not just about spending 2 years studying for my master's and then going out. I have been exposed to paths that I could pursue with an understanding of where they would lead me. That’s an opportunity worth celebrating.”
