  Leverage passion for medical science into a lab-based career. The Bachelor of Medical Science (Laboratory Medicine Professional) connects students with advanced technical skills development and extensive industry experience in medical laboratory environments. Graduates emerge as experts in diagnostic methods for different diseases, as well as in the workflow, regulations and health and safety requirements of professional pathology environments.

  The course is designed as a fourth-year add-on to the Bachelor of Medical Science (Pathology). It is only available through a competitive application process to students who complete the pathology program.

  Course features Course content is dedicated to the acquisition of specialist medical laboratory skills, knowledge and experience. Its comprised of subjects in human pathophysiology, applied pathology technology, molecular pathology and laboratory management, plus a professional placement in a hospital laboratory or related medical environment.

  Students can complete the Bachelor of Medical Science Pathologyprogram over three years full time or six years part time. Part-time students in the Pathology program are required to attend some classes in daytime hours.

  After completion of the Pathology program, the Bachelor of Medical Science (Laboratory Medicine Professional) program is completed in one year of full time study.

  Applicants must have completed an Australian Year 12 qualification, Australian Qualifications Framework Diploma, or equivalent Australian or overseas qualification at the required level.

  This course is available to students who complete the course requirements of the Bachelor of Medical Science Pathology, and demonstrate exceptional academic achievement. Admission is via internal course transfer. Prospective students also submit a statement describing their interest in Laboratory Medicine and their aspirations to develop a career in this field.

  Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

  2025 Indicative tuition fees for government-supported domestic students

  All offers for domestic undergraduate students are for Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP).This means the Australian Government contributes to your education costs, and you pay the remaining tuition fees, known as the student contribution. If eligible, you can defer payment through HECS-HELP, or you can choose to pay your fees upfront each session.

  This course is available by internal course transfer from the Bachelor of Medical Science (Pathology). Placements are limited and applicants are competitively assessed for course transfer in their final session of the Pathology course.
