Develop your career at the University of Technology Sydney, Australia’s Number 1 Young University.

Renowned for its research, industry engagement and international focus, the UTS Institute for Public Policy and Governance (IPPG), incorporating the UTS Centre for Local Government (CLG), forms a dynamic community of students, lecturers, researchers and practitioners. We offer postgraduate courses in applied policy and local government that equip our students with hands-on experience and real-world skills.

Local Government

As a Local Government professional you can work in a wide range of professions, promote positive social change and be connected to community. Our courses have been developed with local government, aimed directly at the issues facing local government in Australia and internationally.

Practice-based learning

With our practice-based approach and sector-leading expertise you develop knowledge and skills valued by employers. The UTS Institute for Public Policy and Governance translates its cutting edge policy-related projects into the classroom to create real alignment between students’ studies and professional practice in government and non-government organisations. This unique learning environment will empower graduates with strong skills which can be immediately applied to professional roles in the dynamic and competitive applied policy environment.

Flexible study options

Our postgraduate courses offer various study patterns with flexible entry and exit points. Students can enter master’s courses directly, or enter or exit at Graduate Diploma (8 subjects) or Graduate Certificate (4 subjects) stage.

Many of our subjects can also be taken as 'stand-alone' short courses if you are not quite ready to enrol into a postgraduate degree.  Flexible options for distance and workplace learning can be arranged with the Course Coordinator.

We value your time

You don’t have to put your career on hold when studying with us. Most of our subjects are offered in flexible block mode, by distance or online for more effective integration of study and work commitments, and our academics are supported by state-of-the-art teaching labs and online resources. You can study full-time or part-time, and you may also receive credit for other approved postgraduate coursework undertaken at UTS or other institutions, or from successfully completed UTS Institute for Public Policy and Governance short courses.

Location, location, location

Located in Ultimo, you’ll be studying in UTS’s state-of-the-art buildings adjacent to Sydney’s CBD.  We are ideally situated to make working and studying easy for you. Our proximity to public transport makes it that much more convenient for you to travel between work, class and home.
