Dr Alex Baumber, sustainability researcher and academic at UTS, shares what it really takes to work in one of the fastest-growing fields of our time.
Sustainability is one of the fastest growing and most diverse fields you can work in today. From environmental science to business, law, design and policy, it cuts across almost every industry, from large corporations working toward net zero to government agencies developing environmental policy.
Dr Alex Baumber is a sustainability researcher and academic at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). For Baumber, one of the most rewarding parts of the job is getting out in the field and talking to people – running interviews and workshops with farmers, hearing stories about different approaches to farming that have increased soil carbon, reduced fertiliser or pesticide use or lowered emissions. Those personal stories and seeing solutions that work in practice and for everyone involved, are what give the work its greatest meaning.
What does a sustainability specialist do?
Sustainability specialists work across a wide range of industries and settings. Some roles are explicitly environmental – for example, environmental scientists and environmental rangers. Others sit inside large organisations, such as sustainability officers, environmental auditors and governance roles. Government agencies employ sustainability and policy officers as well as program managers. And for those who want to work for themselves or discover a new solution, there is also room to create a sustainability-related startup.
Day-to-day work varies just as much. It might involve hands-on product design, field or lab-based research, developing policies and programs within an organisation, or working on marketing campaigns to shift consumer behaviour towards more sustainable choices.

What should you study?
The good news, according to Baumber, is that you can study all sorts of things depending on your interests. At UTS, students across business, science, design and law can all build sustainability into their degree – through a major, a set of elective subjects, or a double degree in sustainability and environment alongside their first qualification.
What skills matter most?
While technical knowledge – environmental, scientific and legal skills – has its place, Baumber believes it's the soft skills that are the really crucial ones when addressing sustainability challenges. Communication, collaboration and empathy are central to almost every role. So is creative problem solving.
Baumber also highlights reflexivity, the ability to think about how you're approaching a problem, to question your own beliefs, norms and assumptions, and to be willing to challenge them. When working with others across disciplines to address sustainability challenges, that kind of self-awareness matters enormously.

What are the challenges?
The breadth of the field is one of its greatest strengths, but it can also be overwhelming. With so many directions available, people starting out often find it hard to know where to focus.
Pace is another common frustration. If you're passionate about creating change, you may find that progress moves more slowly than you'd like. Change takes time, there can be many barriers to overcome, and that's true across organisations, industries and policy alike. It can take time to find your feet and work out exactly where you want to direct your energy.
Advice for getting started
Baumber's advice is to find your passion and know what you want to achieve and why you're getting into it. It's a field where purpose matters and having a clear sense of why you're in it will help you navigate the moments when progress feels slow or the path isn't straightforward.
Looking further ahead, he notes that sustainability challenges will keep evolving and the roles available will shift with them. The big issues of today may not be the same ones in ten years, and advances in artificial intelligence and other technologies will continue to change the landscape. What will remain constant is the need for people who can collaborate, communicate, solve problems creatively and stay adaptive.
