Writing and Publishing + Digital and Social Media

If you love writing and storytelling, a major in Writing and Publishing is an easy choice. However, with so many publications turning digital, a second major in Digital and Social Media may give you the upper hand in your first interview.

"The digital age is here and social media rules all of it. I chose to pair my Writing and Publishing major with a second major in Digital and Social Media to be equipped for future jobs in the growing digital industry."

Journalism + Social and Political Sciences

To be an effective journalist you need to understand society and the social, economic and global issues that shape the world we live in. A second major in Social and Political Sciences will give you the background knowledge and research skills required to succeed as a journalist.

"I chose to study Social and Political Sciences to complement my studies in Journalism as it’s really important to be informed about the political, economic and historic structures our societies operate in - a journalist can’t write political stories without knowing how our democracy works, for example. I also wanted to maximise my job opportunities after graduation - now I have the option to work in either field."

Public Relations and Advertising + Digital and Social Media

For those interested in a career in digital marketing, a double major in Public Relations and Advertising and Digital and Social Media is a great choice. There is currently a skills shortage of digital marketers, the Future Skills Organisation projects that Australia’s supply of digitally expert workers will fall short by 130,000 this year. The digital marketing sector is expected to reach $27.15 billion by 2035 (TalentWeb, 2026.)

With this unique double major, you'll learn extensive campaign development, advertising strategy and pitching skills alongside niche technical skills in digital marketing and social media. By the time you graduate, you'll have a portfolio of campaigns, strategies and digital products to show to your future employers.

"I chose Public Communication (Advertising) and Digital and Social Media as my two majors because while having the traditional skills in communications is essential, pairing it with knowledge and skills for our modern and digital world is equally as important to keep up to date and relevant in all industries."
