Recognising and celebrating UTS students, staff and alumni making a personal contribution to progress sustainability.

Be the sustainability change you want to see

UTS Green Hero Awards logo

UTS hosts the annual green hero awards to recognise and celebrate UTS students, staff and alumni making a personal contribution to progress sustainability.

Initiatives undertaken might include work at UTS or in the broader community.

The awards aim to celebrate participation, showcase impressive initiatives and inspire others to get involved.

Previous UTS Green Hero Award winners

  • Lolita Carson who works in early childhood education at the UTS Magic Pudding Childcare Centre. Over many years she has helped foster and inspire the children’s interest in nature. She helps look after the Centre’s vegetable garden, native beehive, and chickens - getting the children involved at every step.
  • Christina Brauer & Sally Creagh are joint winners. Learning designers nominated for their work developing a sustainability module on Canvas (staff only link) for UTS academics wanting to include sustainability content in their teaching. The module offers ready-to-go materials and activities on sustainability, including the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).
  • Xiang Hong Ong who volunteers at the Bluebird Pantry most weeks, helping do everything from unloading the food donations, to stocking shelves, set-up and arranging displays, as well as meeting and greeting student customers when they arrive. The Pantry provides free food and household items to students doing it tough, and would not be possible without the assistance of amazing student volunteers like Hong.

The judging criteria are:

  • Identify – will a wide spectrum of the UTS community identify with and be able to understand the activity.
  • Influence – does the activity have the potential to inspire and motivate others.
  • Involve – could the activity potentially involve others.
  • Impact – is the activity tangible with real sustainability impacts and benefits.

Equal consideration is given to initiatives of any size and scale.
