Here are some of our frequently asked questions about the Multicultural Women's Network

Five multicultural women in a workplace setting

What is the UTS Multicultural Women's Network (MWN)?

The UTS Multicultural Women's Network (MWN) is a vibrant community at the University of Technology Sydney that promotes cultural diversity and supports women from various cultural backgrounds. It provides a platform for networking, personal development, and advocating for multicultural staff within the university and the broader community.

Why join the UTS Multicultural Women's Network?

Joining MWN allows you to meet like-minded individuals in a safe and supportive space, enhance your leadership and interpersonal skills, and engage in meaningful advocacy for multicultural women. Being part of MWN enables you to contribute to positive changes at UTS and beyond while gaining access to a network of supportive peers and professionals.

Who can join MWN?

MWN welcomes UTS professional and academic, continuing, fixed-term, and sessional/casual staff members who identify as multicultural women with diverse cultural, ethnic, and linguistic heritages, including those from migrant, refugee, and Indigenous backgrounds. MWN recognises that the experiences of multicultural women are shaped by intersecting factors such as race, language, migration status, and systemic barriers

While the MWN’s key goal is to provide a platform for multicultural women, membership is open to all staff including those who do not identify as a multicultural woman. MWN values a diversity of perspectives working together toward a common goal.

If you are an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework student, you may be interested in joining one of the UTS collectives or clubs, or societies that align with your interests to further contribute to creating a positive impact at the university and in the wider community.

What type of activities does MWN hold?

MWN organises a range of activities throughout the year designed to empower, educate, and connect members. Past events have included workshops, seminars, cultural celebrations, and networking events, all reflecting our commitment to supporting multicultural women at UTS. We also host monthly casual coffee catch-ups.

How do I join and participate? Is there a membership fee?

Joining MWN is straightforward. Simply follow these steps:

  1. Complete the Membership Form: Submit your form, and it will be reviewed. Upon approval, you will be notified, added to our Microsoft Teams group and our mailing list to receive our newsletter.
  2. Start Participating: Once you're a member, you can start participating in our events and activities immediately!

There is no membership fee to join MWN.

Where do I find updates about events?

Stay informed about upcoming events and important announcements through the following channels:

  1. Newsletter: After joining our mailing list, you will receive a newsletter with updates and information about upcoming events.
  2. Microsoft Teams Channel: Our Teams channel hosts discussions and advertisements for upcoming events.
  3. Microsoft Outlook Calendar: You will occasionally be sent invites to key events to make it easier for you to remember what is on and when. Please accept if you are able to attend.  If you need any further assistance with this, feel free to ask!

Are there other ways to get involved?

Apart from attending events, you can get involved in several other ways:

  1. Join the Core Committee: Consider taking a leadership role by joining the Core Committee of MWN. This opportunity allows you to be directly involved in decision-making, planning, and execution of our programs and events. It's a great way to develop leadership skills and significantly impact the direction and effectiveness of MWN. The core is also a collaborative team supporting you to achieve your goals and also a great group to foster frienships with other multicultural women across UTS.
  2. Referrals: Help us grow our network by referring other relevant staff or postgraduate students to join MWN.
  3. Participate in Events: Engage with MWN's various initiatives by helping to organise or promote our events. Volunteering for event management or public relations tasks can provide valuable experience and visibility within the community.
