Engage with the UTS Marketing Department

The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) Marketing Department values the relationships it has with its business, government and community partners. Our innovative, practice-oriented approach to teaching and learning, combined with our outcome-focused approach to research means that UTS Business School is an excellent choice as a partner in achieving great things with your organisation.

Members of the UTS Marketing Department are passionate about engaging with those in industry and government for the purposes of teaching and research. There are numerous partnership approaches, which we describe below.

If you are interested to learn more, please reach out to our department’s Associate Head of External Engagement, Associate Professor Adrian Camilleri at Marketing.Engagement@uts.edu.au

Give a Guest Lecture

Our undergraduate and postgraduate subjects are designed to prepare our students for entering the workplace. To facilitate that, we go to great lengths to give our students the opportunity to learn from those who once sat in the very same classrooms but now sit in boardrooms. Why not share your valuable experiences with the next generation?

Recent examples of guest lectures:

  • 24790 Business Project: Aimee Buchanan, CEO Australia and NZ Group M.
  • 24202 Consumer Behaviour: Michael Puglisi, Head of Category at Nestle.
  • 24212 Entrepreneurial Marketing: Scott Kim, CEO of Neofect.
  • 24710 Buyer Behaviour: Ruth Harrison, Co-founder of Streetfighter Media.

Co-create an Assessment Task

We challenge our students with authentic assessment tasks that mimic the tasks they’ll face upon entering the workforce. What better way to get fresh ideas and a head start on finding talent than partnering with one of our subject coordinators to co-create an assessment task? Talented UTS students will work on a project related to your organisation and help you gather insight into opportunities.

Recent examples of co-created assessment tasks:

  • 24742 Product Innovation Management: Dimitrios Papalexis, Founder & Director at Soulgen.
  • 24710 Customer Experience and Behaviour: Michael Drew, Senior Director at Coca-Cola Australia.
  • 24736 Marketing Communications: Zoltan Csaki, Co-founder of Citizen Wolf.
  • 24834 Marketing Decision Making: McCafe; Vodafone.

Partner on a Capstone Project

Students who are specialising in marketing bring all their learning together at the end of their degree with a capstone project. Our students have worked on a range of projects to help inform various companies in terms of their marketing research, positioning, strategy and marketing activities over many years. Previous clients have included Arnott's, Revlon, Goodman Fielder, Ingham's, Sandhurst Fine Foods, Selley's, Coca-Cola, Nespresso and McCafe.

We are always looking for brands and companies that will provide a work-like experience for students in tackling various challenging issues in marketing such as new product development, target marketing, brand development and communications.

Recruit Marketing Students

There are a number of ways for industry to connect with UTS Business School students. Find out about recruiting our best and brightest for your team, or host UTS interns.

Pursue a PhD

Are you passionate about exploring new frontiers in marketing? Then consider pursuing a PhD. Our PhD program offers a unique opportunity for professionals to delve into cutting-edge research, guided by world-class faculty with extensive industry and academic experience. Whether you're interested in consumer behaviour, marketing strategy, or digital analytics, our program is designed to help you become an expert in your field and contribute valuable insights to both academia and industry.

If you are ready to take the next step in your career and make a significant contribution to the field of marketing, explore our PhD program. At UTS, we also have an Industry Doctorate Program where the research project you pursue is defined by your current employer. For more information, please contact our PhD Program Coordinator at Natalina.Zlatevska@uts.edu.au. You can also find a list of our current and past PhD students here.

Learn from an Expert

Members of the UTS Marketing Department have expertise in topics ranging from consumer behaviour to marketing strategy to data analytics to interpretive and critical marketing. See our strength here. Invite one of our members to visit your organisation or participate in a panel to meet with your team and give a presentation on a topic of your choice. After all, as academics, our mission is to produce and share new knowledge.

Recent examples of our academic presenting to industry partners:

  • Adrian Camilleri: Presented on gamification to the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.
  • Kaye Chan: Presented to the Qantas Daramu Network.

Form a Research Collaboration

We are always on the look-out to partner with organisations interested in generating insights from research. We bring a unique academic perspective based on rigorous theories that are designed to understand how people think and behave. Members of the UTS Marketing Department have expertise analysing data you already have, such as scanner data. We also have expertise collecting and analysing new data, including those collected via ethnography, in surveys, and via A/B tests (i.e., experiments). You might even collect new data in our state-of-the-art Behavioural Lab.

Recent examples of research collaborations:

  • Andy West: Collaboration with Nielsen Analytics on attitudes to sports sponsorship.
  • Adrian Camilleri: Collaboration with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia on nudging sustainable financial behaviours.

Apply for a Grant Together

There are numerous research granting agencies that fund research projects that foster collaboration between universities and industry or government partnerships. Often, the granting agency will match the resources contributed by the industry or government partner. This is a great way to double the number of resources you direct at a problem while also bringing in the expertise of research academics. Granting programs include the Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) Program and Australian Research Council Linkage Projects.

Recent examples of successful collaborative grants:

  • Ross Gordon: RACE for 2030
  • Ofer Mintz and Geetanjali Saluja: Digital Marketing Management Training Program for Women Re-entering the Workforce in partnership with IAB Australia, Right Management, In Marketing We Trust, Indago Digital, and Nibble Digital.

Hire Us for Consulting Work

When you have a well scooped problem with a tight deadline for deliverables and want to bring in some experts to get the job done quick, then you might consider hiring one or a team of academics to get the job done. This can be an attractive option if you are keen to own IP and are not interested in publishing any research findings. Work examples include writing literature reviews or serving as an expert witness.

Give a Keynote

We strive to conduct relevant research and the best way to do that is learn what problems those in industry and government and trying to solve. We regularly organise events where experts from industry and government showcase their experience through keynote presentations and panel discussions. In recent years, we have heard experts from Google, Telstra, CBA, Nielsen, Lion, and the NSW State Government.

If you are interested in partnering, please reach out to us at Marketing.Engagement@uts.edu.au
