Note: This is a combined degree, so you cannot do it as a stand-alone course. 

Going overseas for a year gives you the confidence to tackle challenges. You will do a major project, and employers value the time and project management skills you will develop there. You will develop language skills, and the skills needed to be able to operate in intercultural situations.  

After a year overseas, you will return refreshed to the final years of your UTS studies, ready to outperform your peers who stayed at home.

Offered in partnership with 28 other degrees from across the university, the Bachelor of International Studies ensures that graduates bring skills such as resilience, adaptability and critical thinking to any degree or career.

Students choose one of six language programs: Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Italian or Spanish. Language classes are streamed according to proficiency level, from experienced to beginners.

The International Studies course offers a range of streams for students to choose from, with a range of different options and time spent overseas.

I am super, super excited to study at the University of Bologna in Italian, which is a massive challenge, but I think the best way to learn a language is to just absolutely throw yourself in the deep end.

My family is originally from Italy. This degree was an opportunity for me to rediscover that language and learn it at a higher level than I would have ever been able to do by myself.

What typically happens is that students are particularly attracted to what we call the professional degree. For example, they might become nurses, join a start-up, or go into an NGO.

What International Studies does is give them that additional edge in the market or industry they want to join. For example, having that experience of living overseas and gaining those intercultural skills really helps them to be more competitive.

Alongside my studies over the last couple of years, I've been really lucky to work in industry. I've just finished a job working for a not-for-profit charity called Stand Tall, where I had the opportunity to be part of an international community and combine my Management and International Studies degrees.

I've always wanted to be part of an international community. I want to work in an industry where I'm always meeting new people, and I would love the opportunity to use my language and cultural skills.

Depending on how my study abroad goes, I would love to stay in Italy upon completion of my semester next year and potentially look for work over there.
