Hello, I’m associate Professor Alan Jones, and I’m the director of the surgical and anatomical skills laboratory here at UTS.

Well the facility here just opened this year, and it’s the largest modern anatomical facility in NSW, we’ve got a world class facility here with modern technologies for anatomical training for both surgeons and scientists.

In addition to education we also have great research opportunities, particularly in the areas of biomedical engineering, implantable devices, and surgical skills development.

The facility has two major rooms, the larger one we’re in now and a smaller one for surface anatomy, we have lecture theatres, breakout areas and two surgical skills laboratories that can be linked by audio-visual.

We also have a surface anatomy lab and a specimen preparation area, a mortuary and a new plastination facility.

We’re really excited about our new plastination lab, it’s the only one in NSW that is set up for doing human anatomical work and that’s going to be a great boon for us in the future.

So our audio-visual equipment can take input from other sources as well, such as endoscopes, image intensifiers, and other medical devices which allow us to show the students what data is coming from those devices.

We’re really proud of the facility we’ve created here at UTS, and we’re looking forward to developing new relationships and educational opportunities with other professionals in the medical and biomedical sciences.

We’ve already got a lot of different organisations using the facilities, but we’re always open to any new proposal.

The UTS Surgical and Anatomical Science Facility is one of Australia’s foremost dedicated human anatomical laboratories. The facility has world-class specimen viewing and preparation areas, fitted with cutting edge equipment and technologies that allow students and their teachers to work in a safe and comfortable environment as they enhance both their practical skills and their anatomical knowledge. 

The core activities of the facility lie in three main areas:

  1. support for anatomical teaching,
  2. support for commercial surgical developments; and
  3. support for anatomical and scientific research.

The facility supports anatomical teaching across both undergraduate and postgraduate biomedical training contexts and provides an ideal environment for ongoing anatomical training for clinical disciplines. It supports research and development as well as training by commercial enterprises, specialising in the development of new surgical procedures and technologies for modern clinical medical practice. 

Our team of highly skilled technical and academic staff provides anatomical teaching and research resources that set a standard of excellence, designed to meet the increasing challenges of modern surgical and anatomical practice.
