• Course description

  The course is ideal for individuals aspiring to become learning designers, including educators at all levels, corporate trainers, instructional designers, and professionals in related fields. It also caters to current designers seeking formal qualifications to fill knowledge and skill gaps in pedagogy and technology, as well as those looking to transition into or pivot towards learning design roles from sectors such as finance, healthcare, and government, who seek to enhance their digital learning skills and leverage new technologies.

  The growing demand for learning design professionals spans various industries, including education, finance, healthcare, charities, government, and NGOs. Recent disruptions in education and training have amplified the need for advanced digital skills.

  The course develops core competencies in learning design through focused studies that blend practice with essential knowledge. It covers foundational theories of learning design and learning sciences, addressing critical issues like accessibility, privacy, and ethics. Students explore the role of data analytics, assessment, and feedback in learning environments, preparing themselves for future trends and innovations in the field.

  Students study online, with the flexibility to choose between full-time or part-time enrolment. The curriculum includes interactive sessions with local and international educators and authentic assessments. The program culminates in an internship-like experience where students work on a comprehensive learning design project, that contributes to a work-ready portfolio.

  Demand for learning design professionals is growing across a range of industries including education (primary schools, secondary schools, universities), finance, charities, government, health care and non-government organisations.   The course equips students with the skills, knowledge and experience to become a learning designer or to progress in their existing role. Students consider underpinning theories of learning design and learning sciences and examine the characteristics of appropriate learning design, including critical issues such as accessibility, privacy and ethics. Students assess the role of data analytics and the importance of assessment and feedback within learning environments and equip themselves for continued change by examining predicted trends in the field and developing skills to assess and implement new tools and platforms.

  Students develop their knowledge about research-informed design in a close-to-practice environment, interacting with local and international educators, and working on authentic assessments throughout the course. This culminates in an internship-like experience where students work on a comprehensive learning design project that contributes to a work-ready portfolio.

• Course duration

  This course is offered on a half-year, full-time or one-year, part-time basis.

• Admission requirements

  To be eligible for admission to this course, applicants must meet the following criteria.

  Applicants must have one of the following:

  • Completed Australian bachelor's degree or higher qualification, or overseas equivalent

  OR

  • Completed AQF level 6 qualification, or overseas equivalent AND A minimum of 2 years full-time, or equivalent part-time, relevant professional work experience

  OR

  • A minimum of 4 years full-time, or equivalent part-time, relevant professional work experience

  OR

  • Completed 2 or more UTS Learning Design microcredentials AND A minimum of 3 years full-time, or equivalent part-time, relevant professional work experience

  Supporting documentation to be submitted with the application

  For applicants who need to demonstrate professional work experience:

  • Curriculum Vitae AND Statement of service in one of the following formats:
    • A 'Statement of Service' provided by the employer
    • A completed 'UTS statement of service' signed by the employer
    • A statutory declaration confirming work experience (for Australian Residents only)
    • An official letter from the applicant's accountant or solicitor on their company letterhead confirming the applicant's work experience or engagement with the business, duration of operations, and the nature of the business
    • A business certificate of registration in original language and English (e.g. provision of ASIC documentation or ABN or similar documentation for Australian Businesses)

  As a postgraduate student, you'll be responsible for covering your own tuition fees.

  • Indicative first-year tuition fee:  $11,213.00
  • Indicative total tuition fee:  $11,213.00

  You can choose to pay your fees upfront per session, or if you’re eligible, you can defer them using a government FEE-HELP loan. This loan helps you cover all or part of your tuition fees. Keep in mind that applications for this loan are specific to each course.

  Additional Costs 

  Your tuition fees do not include:

  • The Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF), which supports student services and activities. If eligible, you can defer this fee using SA-HELP.
  • Textbooks, materials, and other course-related costs.
  • Any applicable payment processing fees (e.g., credit card surcharges).

  Information for Masters by Research students: Government-funded scholarship places available

  As a recipient of the Australian Government’s Research Training Program (RTP) Fees Offset Scholarship, you do not have to pay tuition fees for up to the maximum period of candidature. However, even with this scholarship, you should expect ongoing costs that aren’t covered, like travel, training, and professional development. These costs can vary for each person, so it’s important to plan accordingly. Additionally, scholarships are available to help with your living expenses.
