Overview

The Law Equity Scholarship aims to support a commencing UTS undergraduate Law student that demonstrate financial need and support them during their study.

In addition to financial need, students experiencing other educational disadvantage(s) may be given preference.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible for the Scholarship, an applicant must meet the criteria:

  • Australian or New Zealand citizens, or the holder of an Australian permanent resident visa or permanent humanitarian visa; and 
  • Have received an offer through Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) for a UTS Bachelor of Laws (single or combined) degree; and 
  • Be commencing the first year of a UTS Bachelor of Laws (single or combined) degree;
  • Apply through UAC for an Equity Scholarship and therein demonstrate financial disadvantage; and
  • All candidates must apply using the online scholarships application form to be eligible; and
  • All candidates must be available to attend an interview in person.

 

Additionally, preference may be given to applicants that have experienced any other educational barriers as assessed by the UAC Equity Scholarship. The following equity criteria will be considered:

 

  • Regional or remote background 
  • Sole parent responsibilities
  • Carer responsibilities
  • Refugee Status
  • Indigenous Australian
  • Medical Disadvantage 

Selection process

Eligible candidates will be presented to a Scholarships Committee, which will undertake the selection of Recipients based on,

  • Academic Merit (ATAR excluding bonus points or equivalent qualification)
  • Evidence of financial need as assessed by the UAC Equity Scholarship application.
  • As demonstrated in the scholarship application and interview:
  • Motivation to succeed in the chosen Faculty of Law course;
  • Demonstrated initiative in personal and professional life;

Other information

When applying through UAC for UTS Equity Scholarships, Family Tax Benefit will not be considered as demonstrative of financial hardship. Only applicants receiving a Centrelink means-tested income support payment, or demonstrating exceptional financial hardship with supporting evidence will be considered.

To be eligible for this scholarship, you will need to apply to Centrelink (or make a claim) for the Youth Allowance/Abstudy or other Centrelink benefit applicable to you. Your application may still be considered once you have provided evidence of a Centrelink (or other Commonwealth) means-tested income support payment (such as Youth Allowance, Austudy, Abstudy).

Steps to update your details:

  1. Apply for a means-tested income support payment (such as Youth Allowance, Austudy, Abstudy) via Centrelink - click on `Register' online. Centrelink will provide you with your own Centrelink Reference Number (CRN)
  2. Please apply for a UAC Equity Scholarship with your Centrelink Customer Reference Number (CRN). Apply at uac.edu.au/equity/
  3. You must submit or update your details on UAC website by the scholarship closing date.
