The Lidcombe Program Workshop

About the Lidcombe Program Workshop

The Lidcombe Program is an evidence-based behavioural treatment for early stuttering in children.

The treatment is administered to children by parents under the supervision of a clinician. There are two Stages in the Lidcombe Program. During Stage 1, the child achieves no stuttering or almost no stuttering. During Stage 2, the child maintains that achievement for a long period. The treatment in the Lidcombe Program involves parent verbal contingencies, used during everyday conversations. Clinical measurement of stuttering is critical in the Lidcombe Program because it is a focus of all management decisions and the focus of all communication about stuttering between the clinician, parent, and child.

Further information can be found on the Lidcombe Program Trainers Consortium website.

The Lidcombe Program Workshop is designed for speech pathologists who are interested in using the Lidcombe Program. The workshop will include short presentations, small- and large-group activities, viewing and discussion of treatment videos, and case discussions.

Learning outcomes for participants include

  • understanding the rationale and concepts of the Lidcombe Program
  • the ability to confidently conduct the components of the Lidcombe Program.

Further information and resources for the Lidcombe Program can be found on our Lidcombe Program resource page and on the Lidcombe Program Trainers Consortium website.

Clinical Procedures Workshop for School-Age Children Who Stutter (7–12 years of age)

About the Clinical Procedures for School-Age Children Who Stutter Workshop

This workshop is designed for speech pathologists to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to assist school-age children who stutter. The information in the workshop is presented by speech pathologists who specialise in stuttering treatment.

The workshop begins with an overview of the characteristics of stuttering in school-age children, measurement of stuttering, and initial assessment. Overarching principles to guide clinical practice with this client group are introduced.

Evidence-based stuttering treatments are described, including the Lidcombe Program, the Oakville Program, KIDS, speech restructuring treatment, and self-imposed time-out. The focus of this workshop is not to teach the individual treatments but to problem solve which treatments to employ, as well as common issues in their implementation.

Participants learn through discussion and role-play, through video demonstration, and by hearing from all key stakeholders including children who stutter, their parents, speech pathologists, and psychologists.

Learning outcomes

  • understand the general characteristics of stuttering in school-age children

  • assess and measure stuttering in this population

  • gain an understanding of the role of the speech pathologist when working with this population

  • describe the evidence for, and have an understanding of, treatments that may be used

  • gain experience in problem solving some of the clinical issues encountered

Prior learning recommendations

Although not mandatory, we strongly encourage attending the Lidcombe Program and Syllable Timed Speech workshops before joining this session. These workshops introduce key program techniques that will not be revisited during this workshop.

To ensure a productive learning experience, participants are expected to have a working understanding of programs discussed. Pre-reading materials will be distributed prior to the workshop to support your preparation.

Further information on Lidcombe Program workshops can be found on this web page. Please contact us at ASPD@uts.edu.au if you need to check eligibility.

The Camperdown Program Workshop

About the Camperdown Program Workshop

The Camperdown Program is a treatment for adults and adolescents who stutter. The aim of the program is for clients to learn a speech technique to help them control their stuttering in situations of their choosing.

The Camperdown Program is most often implemented during weekly consultations with a speech pathologist, in the clinic or via telepractice; however, it can also be implemented in a group or intensive format. While the workshop will focus on individual weekly treatment, other formats will be discussed.

This Camperdown Program workshop has been revised to reflect the new terminology and procedures outlined in the 2024 Camperdown Treatment guide. It is designed for speech pathologists who are interested in using the program to treat adults or adolescents who stutter. It integrates some theory and research evidence, where relevant, for understanding program concepts. However, the workshop will be practical-based with a focus on the skills needed to implement the various stages of the program. The workshop includes short presentations, small- and large-group practical activities, viewing and discussion of treatment videos, and problem-solving activities.

Learning outcomes

  • understand the context and evidence for the Camperdown Program
  • understand the concepts and components of the Camperdown Program
  • confidently implement the components of the Camperdown Program
  • understand and teach client problem-solving strategies.

Further information and resources for the Camperdown Program can be found on our Camperdown Program resource page.

SYLLABLE-TIMED SPEECH WORKSHOP

About the Syllable-Timed Speech Workshop

This workshop is designed for speech pathologists aiming to develop clinical expertise in the use of Syllable-Timed Speech (STS) for school-age children who stutter.

The workshop provides a comprehensive overview of the Oakville and Westmead STS protocols, with a focus on adapting treatment to the cognitive, emotional, and social needs of children aged 6–12.

Participants will explore the rationale behind STS, including its theoretical basis and its evidence base across different age groups. The workshop highlights the unique challenges of treating school-age children, such as increased anxiety, classroom demands, and the need for flexible approaches.

Through case studies, video demonstrations, and interactive practice, attendees will learn how to implement STS systematically, including measurement techniques, parent training, use of prompts and praise, and transitioning to natural speech.

The workshop also addresses problem-solving strategies for common clinical scenarios, including treatment resistance, comorbid conditions, and telehealth practice.

Learning outcomes for participants include:

  • Understand the theoretical and clinical foundations of STS
  • Differentiate between STS protocols for preschool and school-age children
  • Apply STS techniques including measurement, prompting, and praise
  • Adapt STS for children with complex needs or prior treatment history
  • Problem-solve implementation challenges in real-world settings

Prior Learning Recommendations:

Although not mandatory, we strongly encourage attending the Lidcombe Program Workshop before joining this session. Familiarity with the treatment framework will enhance your learning experience. Pre-reading materials will be distributed prior to the workshop to support your preparation.
