Democracy and global energy transition: the hydrocarbon sector in Australia
Team members: James Goodman, Jeremy Walker, Kristen Lyons, Tom Morton, Brett Govendir, Roman Lanis, Maureen Henninger, Kyla Tienhaara, William Carroll, Dieter Plehwe.
Australian climate and energy policy has recently been highly disrupted, raising important questions of governance capacity. Transnationally-linked hydrocarbon corporations (THCs) exert considerable influence on policy options, but their modes of organisation are not well understood or publicly visible. This inter-disciplinary project – integrating methods from accounting, information science, media studies, sociology of technology, and political geography – analyses the organisation of the fossil fuel sector and the interaction of THCs with Australian democracy, government and environmental policy-making.
