At UTS, we are committed to creating a safe, respectful and inclusive community where everyone can learn, work and thrive.
Respect Matters and Consent Matters are our staff and student online training programs that build a shared understanding of respectful behaviour, positive intervention, consent and the support available at UTS when harmful behaviour occurs.
The mandatory training is one part of UTS’s broader program to address gender-based violence (GBV) and foster a culture of respect, safety and belonging.
All staff and students are required to complete the relevant training.
Information for students
The student module is Consent Matters and you’ll find it in Canvas.
Completing the training will take approximately one hour. It can be done in a single session, or across multiple sessions.
To complete the training, you must:
- read all content in each section
- receive 80% in the quiz that appears at the end.
Complete the training in Canvas now
- Login to Canvas and go to ‘Courses’
- Select ‘Consent Matters’
- Select the ‘Welcome to Consent Matters’ to begin the course.
If you are both a student and a staff member, you must complete both the student and staff training modules.
Completion deadline
Coursework students must complete Consent Matters by the results release date of your first session at UTS.
For UTS Online students, the deadline is the end of your third teaching period.
Failure to complete Consent Matters
Because Consent Matters is a compulsory requirement, students who do not complete the training will receive a Consent Matters sanction.
While this sanction is active, you will not be able to:
- review your subject results in My Student Admin
- access your official academic record (transcript)
- access graduation documents or register to attend a graduation ceremony
To remove the sanction, complete the training and receive 80% in the quiz. You may need to wait up to 72 hours for your sanction to be lifted.

Information for staff
The staff module is Respect Matters. It’s available through NEO.
The training supports UTS’s commitment to fostering a workplace culture where everyone is treated with dignity and respect, and where inappropriate behaviour is recognised, challenged and addressed.
Important: You must use Firefox to complete the training – other browsers may not record your completion correctly.
Additional information for staff, including payment information for casual staff, is available on the UTS SharePoint (log in required).
If you are both a staff member and a student, you must complete both the staff and student modules.
If accessing training off campus, follow these instructions using the search term ‘Respect Matters’.
Exemptions
We recognise that training on this matter may cause distress to some people, particularly those who have experienced trauma.
If it is not in your best interests to undertake the training, you can apply for an exemption. Fill out the relevant form and emailing it to respect.matters@uts.edu.au:
- students: Request to opt out of Consent Matters form
- staff: Request to opt out of Respect Matters form
Verification can be supplied by any of the following:
- a counsellor (including a UTS counsellor)
- a registered medical practitioner with a Medicare provider number
- a registered psychologist.
Opt-out requests submitted without the required form and supporting verification will not be actioned.
Your information
When you attempt or complete Consent Matters or Respect Matters training, information will be collected about your progress, completion status and results.
- Student results will be recorded in Canvas under ‘My Grades’ and in My Student Admin
- Staff results will be recorded in NEO, under ‘Online Learning Management’, My Learning
The collected information will be used to:
- record your completion
- troubleshoot any issues with you if your completion has not been properly recorded
- monitor the effectiveness of the training
- ensure ongoing quality improvement and planning.
The information may also be used or disclosed in the event of an investigation into an allegation relevant to sexual harm, or if required or permitted by law.
You can access your results at any time. If you have completed the module but it is not reflected in the system, contact the Student Centre (students) or the People Unit (staff).
