UTS is delighted to welcome Professor Zee Upton as our new Dean of the Faculty of Health.
Professor Zee Upton has joined UTS as Dean of the Faculty of Health. Professor Upton is an accomplished academic leader and research and innovation executive with deep experience in strategy, governance, commercialisation, industry partnerships and organisational transformation. Most recently, she was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) and the Pro Vice-Chancellor in the College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing at the University of Newcastle, where she remains an Honorary Professor.
UTS Vice-Chancellor Professor Andrew Parfitt said Professor Upton’s comprehensive understanding of the healthcare system and demonstrated commitment to fostering collaboration and strategic partnerships between universities and the health care sector made her well positioned to advance the Faculty of Health’s mission and to sustain its longstanding commitment to driving innovation, its strong clinical and patient care focus and distinguished track record of academic and research excellence.
“Professor Upton brings a wealth of experience in education, research and health leadership, together with a strong commitment to collaboration and meaningful partnerships,” Professor Parfitt said.
“Her appointment reflects our ambition to deepen our connections with industry and the community, translate research into real-world impact, and prepare graduates to thrive in a rapidly evolving health care sector. I am delighted to welcome Professor Upton to UTS and look forward to working closely with her.”
Professor Upton brings a wealth of experience in education, research and health leadership, together with a strong commitment to collaboration and meaningful partnerships.
Professor Upton said she was looking forward to joining the UTS community and leading the Faculty of Health as it strengthened its reputation for innovation and impact.

A biochemist by training, Professor Upton has deep experience in medical biotechnology and cell biology and is a Member of the Australian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Before joining the University of Newcastle in 2021, Professor Upton held academic appointments and leadership roles at the Skin Research Institute of Singapore, A*STAR’s Institute of Medical Biology, Queensland University of Technology and CSIRO Human Nutrition. In these roles she grew national and international partnerships across academia, industry and government, strengthened commercialisation pipelines and oversaw strategy, research integrity and major organisational transformation.
Professor Upton holds a PhD in Biochemistry, a Bachelor of Science and First Class Honours in biochemistry all from the University of Adelaide.
Professor Toby Newton-John concludes his time in the role of Dean on 7 August.
Professor Parfitt thanked Professor Newton-John for his leadership as Interim Dean over the past five months.
“Toby has been crucial in guiding the faculty through a period of significant change, and he has been a valued member of the University Leadership Team”, Professor Parfitt said.
Professor Upton will commence in the role on Monday 10 August.
