UTS has been recognised as the 7th best university in Australia and New Zealand, and 85th in the world, by a major US ranking of higher education institutions.

The US News and World Report Best Global Universities 2026-27 gave UTS a glowing report card, with 10 subject areas (out of the 32 ranked) being placed among the top 50 in the world.  

UTS was ranked as the top university in Australia and New Zealand across 8 subject areas – mechanical engineering, water resources, electrical/electronic engineering, artificial intelligence, civil engineering, green and sustainable science and technology, engineering, and computer science. 

The headline ranking of 85th in the world was underpinned by strong performance in rating for regional research performance and the percentage of academic publications among the most cited. 

UTS subjects ranked top 50 in the world by Best Global Universities:

  • #11 in mechanical engineering (#1 in Australia and New Zealand)
  • #11 in water resources (#1 in Australia and New Zealand)
  • #12 in electrical and electronic engineering (#1 in Australia and New Zealand)
  • #15 in artificial intelligence (#1 in Australia and New Zealand)
  • #18 in civil engineering (#1 in Australia and New Zealand)
  • #21 in green and sustainable science and technology (#1 in Australia and New Zealand)
  • #30 in engineering (#1 in Australia and New Zealand)
  • #30 in energy and fuels (#2 in Australia and New Zealand)
  • # 31 in computer science (#1 in Australia and New Zealand)
  • #49 in education and educational research (#11 in Australia and New Zealand)

UTS Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Andrew Parfitt welcomed the outstanding result as reflecting the university’s leading expertise across a range of discipline areas. 

“From engineering and artificial intelligence to water and sustainability, UTS academics are at the forefront of their fields,” he said. 

“It’s an outstanding result that UTS is being recognised a time when global competition is increasing and universities around the world are investing in their strengths.” 

The US News and World Report Best Global Universities 2026-27 ranks 2,250 universities from 100 countries around the world across 13 indicators that measure their academic research performance and global and regional reputations.
