The unrest in Iran

29 September 2022
A sign saying #Human Rights for Future

In recent days, we have seen the reports and images of the demonstrations over the death of Iranian woman Mahsa Amini. The violence in Iran is deeply distressing to many students and staff, especially those with family and friends living there.

UTS Vice-Chancellor Professor Andrew Parfitt said that UTS supports our Iranian community at this time.

“I am deeply saddened by the death of Mahsa Amini in Iran, and the reports of potentially other deaths and detainments. Many people in Iran are bravely risking their lives in support of greater freedoms,” he said.

“The UTS community has always banded together in times of crises, and I encourage you all to look out for your fellow students and colleagues – and particularly our Iranian friends and colleagues – during these difficult times.”

Professor Parfitt advised that members of the UTS community can reach out for support if they need it via the following channels.

UTS Counselling Support

Students can contact the UTS Counselling Service – please phone 02 9514 1177 to make an appointment.

Staff members can contact the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) which is available to all UTS staff and their immediate family members and provides free, professional and confidential counselling support.

Counselling is also available through STARTTS, who provide culturally relevant psychological treatment and support to help people and communities who have been affected by torture and trauma. UTS counsellors can assist with a referral if a student wishes.

Tuition fees

Iranian students can book an appointment to discuss extensions or payment plans for tuition fees that are due for Spring if this is appropriate. Please phone 02 9514 1177 for an appointment with the Financial Assistance Service team.

Special consideration

Requests for special consideration for affected students may also be required. Read more about special consideration and apply.

Humanitarian Scholarship Program

The Humanitarian Scholarship Program exists to support undergraduate study for students from a refugee or asylum seeker background. More than a scholarship, it includes comprehensive support for students throughout their study, covering:

  • Assistance with tuition fees and educational costs
  • Support with transition and on-boarding
  • Peer and academic mentoring
  • Paid internship opportunities
  • Graduate career help

Read more information on the scholarship or reach out to the Humanitarian Scholarship Program team.
