Postgraduate FAQs

You can apply for most postgraduate coursework programs through the UTS Student Portal.

The general steps are:

• choose your course and check the entry requirements on the course page
• prepare your documents, such as academic transcripts and supporting evidence
• submit your application through the UTS Student Portal (Postgraduate  or Postgraduate Online application tile)
• track your application and respond to any requests for additional documents

Some courses may have additional requirements, such as portfolios, interviews or work experience.

Applications usually open several months before the start of each teaching session.

UTS typically offers intakes in:

• Autumn session (February commencement): applications open from late July
• Spring session (July commencement): applications open from February
• Summer session (November-December commencement for selected courses only): applications open from February

Application deadlines vary by course and intake. Refer to the UTS Principal Dates for application deadlines for your preferred session.

The documents required depend on the course you are applying for.

Common documents include:

• academic transcripts or completion certificates
• curriculum vitae (CV) or work experience details
• proof of identity or change of name documentation (if you have changed your name since completing your degree)
• English language test results (if required)
• portfolio or other supporting documents for some courses

Always check the course page for admission requirements.

Late applications are generally not accepted once the deadline has passed. Refer to the UTS Principal Dates for application deadlines for your preferred session.

 If you want to study a single subject without enrolling in a full degree, you may be able to apply for non-award study.

You can apply online and nominate the subject you want to study. Availability depends on the subject and whether places are available.

Yes. You can can submit up to three course applications at a time. 

You'll be assessed on your highest eligible preference based on its entry requirements and available places.

Some courses consider relevant professional experience as part of the admission assessment.

Work experience may help demonstrate your knowledge and skills, particularly for courses designed for professionals. If required, evidence of your relevant work experience typically includes:

• a current Curriculum Vitae or resume outlining your roles, responsibilities and period of employment, and  
• a Statement of Service confirming dates of employment and hours worked.

Requirements vary by course, so check the course page for details.

You can apply for the course if you are undertaking your final session in the course. You may be eligible for a conditional offer pending completion of your course and any other specific entry requirements.

Entry requirements vary depending on the course.

Most postgraduate coursework programs require a completed bachelor degree or an equivalent qualification. Some courses may also require completion of prerequisite subjects, work experience or a portfolio.

Always check the course page for the specific entry requirements.

Some courses require you to have completed specific subjects during your previous studies.

These subjects help ensure you have the knowledge needed to succeed in the course.

If prerequisites apply, they will be listed on the course page under admission requirements.

Some postgraduate courses accept applicants with a bachelor degree in any discipline. Other courses require a degree in a related field.

If your previous study is not directly related, you may still be considered if you have relevant work experience or additional qualifications. Always check the course page for the specific entry requirements.

Many courses require a minimum academic average, such as a WAM (Weighted Average Mark) or GPA.

The required score varies by course and may change depending on demand and the number of available places.

UTS accepts many international qualifications that are equivalent to an Australian bachelor degree.

Your qualification will be assessed during the application process to determine whether it meets the course requirements.

You may also need to provide certified academic transcripts and proof of completion.

All applicants to UTS are required to meet English language requirements. See English Language requirements for more information. 

Yes, there are higher English requirements for programs in Nursing, Teaching and Health. See English Language requirements for more information.

  If you do not currently meet the entry requirements for the Master’s degree, there may be alternative pathway options available.

In some cases, applicants may be eligible for a related Graduate Certificate, if one is offered for the course. Upon successful completion of the Graduate Certificate, you may then be able to articulate into the Master’s program, subject to meeting any additional requirements (if applicable).

All applicants to UTS including Permanent Residents and NZ citizens are required to meet English language requirements. 

If your previous study was completed in English, you may already meet the requirement. Otherwise, you may need to provide results from an approved English language test.

You may be able to defer your offer to a later session, depending on your course. To request a deferral:

• log in to MyStudentAdmin
• select the Defer Offer option (if available)
• submit your request before the acceptance deadline

If the course is listed as not deferrable, you will need to submit a new application to be considered for the later intake.

If you have accepted your offer and no longer wish to take up your place, you will need to apply for withdrawal from the course by submitting the Online course withdrawal form.

If you have already enrolled or paid fees, check the census date and refund policies for your course.

If you withdraw your application or offer by mistake, contact the UTS admissions team as soon as possible.

They may be able to advise whether your application can be reinstated or if you need to submit a new application.

• Most postgraduate coursework courses at UTS are offered as full-fee places. However, some courses offer Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) for eligible domestic students.
• If your course has a CSP, you may be eligible for a HECS-HELP loan to defer your tuition fees. CSP availability is limited and not all postgraduate courses offer these places.
• If your course is a full-fee place, you may still be eligible for a FEE-HELP loan to help defer your tuition fees.

You can check your course page to see whether CSP or HELP loan options are available.

FEE-HELP is a Commonwealth Government loan that helps eligible students pay their tuition fees.

You may be eligible for FEE-HELP if you are:

• an Australian citizen
• a New Zealand Special Category Visa holder who meets residency requirements
• a permanent humanitarian visa holder who meets eligibility criteria

If you are eligible, you can defer all or part of your tuition fees and repay the loan through the Australian tax system once your income reaches the repayment threshold.

No, permanent residents are not eligible for Commonwealth Government financial assistants such as HECS-HELP or FEE-HELP, and must pay their tuition fees upfront.

You may be eligible to defer your fees through a HELP loan if you are:

• a New Zealand citizen holding a Special Category Visa (SCV) and you meet the long‑term residency requirements; or
• the holder of a permanent humanitarian visa and you meet the relevant eligibility criteria.

Eligibility for HELP loans depends on your visa type and whether you meet the residency and eligibility requirements at the relevant census date.

• Full fee‑paying students
  Tuition fees are charged per subject, based on the credit points you enrol in. Studying full‑time means enrolling in more subjects per session, so you will pay more at that time, while part‑time study spreads costs over a longer period.
  
  
• Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) students
  You pay a student contribution amount per subject, which depends on what you study. Each subject is assigned to a funding cluster based on it's subject area, and the Australian Government sets the maximum student contribution that a university can charge for subjects in each cluster. 

If your course includes subjects from different funding clusters, you may pay different student contribution amounts for different subjects, regardless of whether you study full-time or part-time.

Please note that tuition fees are reviewed annually and may increase over time, so the total amount you pay across your course may change depending on when subjects are taken.

Your Commonwealth Assistance Notice (CAN) confirms CSP enrolment and any government assistance applied to your fees.

If you are not recieving CSP or accessing a HELP Loan, you will not be issued with a CAN.

You can access your CAN through MyStudentAdmin after the census date for each teaching session.

UTS will also send a notification when your CAN is available.

Postgraduate coursework tuition fees vary by course and subject.

Full fee‑paying students are charged tuition fees per subject, based on the number of credit points enrolled. Fee rates are set by the University and can differ between courses.

Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) students pay a student contribution amount per subject. The amount depends on the subject area (funding cluster), with maximum rates set by the Australian Government.

Your total tuition cost depends on:

• the subjects you enrol in, and
• how many subjects you take per session.

Tuition fees and student contribution amounts are reviewed annually and may increase.

Government loan options

• Eligible CSP students may defer their student contribution through HECS‑HELP.
• Eligible full fee‑paying postgraduate students may be able to defer tuition fees through FEE‑HELP, up to the lifetime HELP limit.

Payment options

• Tuition fees are generally due by the census date for each subject.
• The University does not offer formal payment plan or instalment options for full fee‑paying students.
• Students who anticipate difficulty paying their fees should contact the Student Fees team as early as possible to discuss what options may be available in their circumstances.

Eligibility for HELP loans depends on your visa type, residency status, and meeting the required conditions by the relevant census date.
