Australia's first cross-disciplinary degree in sustainability
-
So, every industry has something to do with Sustainability
and there will be a career path somewhere
and I'm looking forward to
trying lots of different things.
My name is Sian Hamilton and
I am studying a Bachelor of Business and
Bachelor of Sustainability and Environment
The Bachelor of Sustainability and Environment is
a new, combined degree on offer at UTS.
It's designed to ensure students are prepared
for a workforce increasingly focused on sustainability
and environmentally conscious business practice.
As a transdisciplinary degree,
the Bachelor of Sustainability and Environment ensures students will graduate with skills in
problem solving, evaluation, and the ability to understand
and work with different stakeholders,
to creatively innovate in the field of sustainability,
and future-proof them for the changes of the modern workforce.
So I chose to study the combined degree on my own
just from the fact that it was
sort of a cross-disciplinary approach to it
so it wasn't just science focused.
Some other courses I looked at were more heavily focused on science
but the fact that there was the Sustainability aspect
and I'd be studying alongside people doing
Business, or Management, or Health Science
I was really drawn to that approach
to see all those different perspectives.
My favourite part definitely has been the
field trip we went on to The Coal Loader Sustainability Centre.
It was really interesting to just get out into the field
and actually see some Sustainability in practice
and definitely the focus on Indigenous perspectives of Sustainability
I think has been really really fascinating.
My name is Nodoka and I'm studying
the Bachelor of Health Science and the
Bachelor of Sustainability and Environment.
So I was doing Health Administration
and then after that I worked in a Sustainability organisation
and then it was great that UTS had a combined degree
because it really brought both of my working experiences together.
In the degree, students will engage with industries and
organisations doing real work on
the different dimensions of sustainability.
They'll also engage with communities most impacted by
enviromental problems and sustainability interventions.
Well I would do a Sustainability role right now
if I was back at that time of choosing.
It is a really important area and a growing area
because Sustainability is very broad
it covers social, environmental and economic aspects
and it is a very multi-disciplinary approach so
the scope of what a Sustainability professional or a
Sustainability role will take
is very broad.
You will be looking at what are the key opportunities,
what are the key problem statements
and how do we work towards solving those.
I can only see it growing
in terms of trying to find solutions the complex problems.
I'm a graduate in Deloitte's
Energy Transition and Decarbonisation Team.
So, we've got Engineers, we've even got a Mathematician
we've got lawyers
given that we have such a diversity in disciplinary backgrounds
that's also reflected in the types of work we do
and the clients we work for.
So we offer a range of services
this includes advising clients on new
rules in the National Electricity Market
and then we also offer sort of more, bigger picture
policy, decarbonisation work for government clients.
Yeah it's definitely a very diverse team
with lots of different types of work and clients.
There is significant change in the industry at the moment
there's lots of jobs coming available for graduates
things are changing, we're moving away from a carbon intensive world
to a low-carbon future.
I think Sustainability now, has become something
that every single sector in the economy is thinking about
and prioritising.
The advice I would have is not to limit yourself to
only certain sectors
that you may traditionally think of as 'environmental'.
Everyone asks me what I'd like to do when I graduate,
it's, a big one.
I actually think I would have to summarise with 'I don't know'
but
I'm quite excited by that as well, and
from what I've heard from other people in the industry
you find your path as you go along.
I imagine that by the time I've finished the degree
there will probably be some jobs that, might be available
that don't even exist yet,
I'm quite confident that I'll discover something that I really really love
while completing the degree.
