Sana Aman graduated from UTS in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology and major in Programming. A year later, she was working as a Senior IT Risk Consultant at PwC Australia.

Arriving in Australia from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 2015, Sana was drawn to UTS for its world-renown reputation in technology, practical approach to preparing students for their careers, and the variety of subjects and electives that shape well-rounded graduates. She was excited to learn many IT subjects including programming, networking, business, management, and user experience/user interface (UX/UI) design.

“I feel every subject at UTS is designed in a way that not only helps you build your foundation but also helps you experience what a career in that field would be like, which really helps to make better career decisions in the future.”

“I became part of the Muslim Society, which helped me make close friends. UTS has its own multicultural space and those events gave me joy to meet so many like myself with a similar background and struggles. It gave me a sense of belonging.”

Although having family in Sydney helped with her move away from home, the transition was not without its challenges.

“Being a hijabi who was raised in Saudi and had never been to Australia, there were countless struggles. I had never studied computer science or any tech related subjects during high school, so I had this constant stress that I won't be able to do my degree or get a good corporate job.”

Sana found comfort in student societies and volunteering helped her find a community in a new country.

“I became part of the Muslim Society (UTSMS), which helped me make close friends. UTS has its own multicultural space and those events gave me joy to meet so many like myself with a similar background and struggles. It gave me a sense of belonging. I still volunteer with UTS – I meet women freshmen and new graduates and encourage them to pursue a career in tech.”

The UTS brand added so much value to my resume. Recruiters considered that anyone graduating from UTS would be skilled enough to work for their firm.

She relied on UTS Careers and tutors to build confidence in her studies and prepare for the job search. Through the UTS Careers Fair, Sana learnt what recruiters were looking for in the current job market and was able to network with recruiters before graduating. She gained the confidence and soft skills she needed to start her career.

“I was lucky enough to secure my first job immediately after graduating, all thanks to UTS Careers and the support of my tutor. I was constantly looking for jobs and reached out to my tutors for help. One day I searched the UTS Careers portal and found a job that matched my skillset. Coincidentally, my tutor also found the same job for me. The UTS brand added so much value to my resume as well. Recruiters considered that anyone graduating from UTS would be skilled enough to work for their firm.”

So my name is Sana. I'm ethnically from Pakistan, but I'm born and raised in Saudi Arabia. I did my Bachelor's of Science in IT and I did my major in programming and sub-major in business information systems.

A year after graduating, I was working as a senior IT risk consultant at PwC and I'm currently working as a Controls Assurance Manager at Commonwealth Bank.

The degree is designed very nicely here. They start with giving you the theoretical knowledge and then they give you a hands-on experience on the different applications or give you experience of how things would look in the professional world.

Reading and writing SQL is one thing that I use in my current job, so when we have to read through scripts, that all comes from uni experience. In my first year, I got an idea of how all the different IT sectors, whether it be networking, UX, UI, SQL, I got to experience all of them. That was really fun because you would eventually get bored if you were just given theoretical knowledge but if you're given a complete picture, it not only helps you make better informed career decisions, but also makes your university life more enjoyable.

When I interacted with the Muslim society or the Saudi society, you'd get confidence of how to interact and talk with people from different cultures, different nationalities, because that's one thing that you do at a workplace as well. I have gained so much confidence to basically just interact with people, help coach people at my work, as well as to talk to my seniors and give my feedback. So I think it's more so the confidence  and the soft skills and the communication networking skills that I've gained through uni, which has really helped me through my career.

I would say to any other future international student the degree here at the UTS is built in a way that will help you understand everything from scratch. So you do not need to worry about knowing everything when you're stepping in, you just need to step in with a mindset that you're willing to learn and you're willing to put in 100% and do the hard work that's required for you to survive. So you don't really need to worry about it. You can just take a step back, just relax and do everything that the uni is asking you to do and you’ll be all fine.

A year after graduating, Sana was working as a Senior IT Risk Consultant in Sydney for one of the leading accounting firms in the world, PwC Australia, and as of 2025, she is a Risk Frameworks and Insights Manager at Commonwealth Bank. She even made the dean’s list – something else she never imagined she’d achieve.

Offering advice to current students, Sana says, “You can go anywhere you want to as long as you work towards it. Get yourself out of your comfort zone, socialise and network, keep looking for opportunities, never hesitate to start with the small jobs, absorb all the information and knowledge around you and learn from your experiences.”
