Na’ama is building her cybersecurity career through industry pathways at UTS.
Naima Crawford (Na'ama) is already building a career in cybersecurity while completing her degree at UTS.
Through the UTS Industry Degree Academy (IDeA) cadetship, she’s gaining government cybersecurity experience at the NSW Premier’s Department and shaping a future in cyber law.
Initially considering business or law, Na’ama’s course direction shifted after attending a UTS Open Day, where she discovered industry-based learning opportunities.
After applying broadly across the UTS Engineering and IT programs and scholarships, she secured a place in the Bachelor of Cybersecurity through the IDeA cadetship, launching her into both university study and full-time industry experience.
Building skills through real-world experience
Working alongside her studies, Na’ama has spent the past year developing practical cybersecurity skills in a government environment, spanning across cybersecurity operations, identity and access management, and exposure to large-scale digital projects.
The UTS IDeA cadetship model has also given her a clear advantage; three years of continuous industry experience by the time she graduates.
Through rotations within her organisation, she is now moving into the Information and Privacy Team in the Legal Branch, gaining experience at the intersection of technology and law.
Being able to apply what you learn straight away makes everything click.
A clear cyber law pathway
Tying it back to her interest in law, the rotations have helped Na’ama plan ahead - she's now considering a Juris Doctor to combine legal expertise with her cybersecurity background.
UTS community and networks
Alongside her academic and professional experience, Na’ama has also built strong connections through UTS societies and industry engagement, helping her navigate her field and build confidence.
She's taken a proactive approach to networking, attending industry events, connecting with professionals and seeking out conversations that expand her understanding of career pathways.
At UTS, you’re not waiting until you graduate to start your career. You’re already doing it.
Advice to future students
For people interested in cybersecurity, industry experience or combining technology with law, Na'ama encourages them to just start.
"The right opportunities can shape both your degree and your future."
