Dr Simon Walsh

Dr Simon Walsh PSM is the National Manager Strategy & Performance at the Australian Federal Police (AFP), where he leads strategic initiatives that shape the future of law enforcement capability and performance across Australia.

Widely regarded as one of the nation’s foremost forensic authorities, Dr Walsh has held several pivotal roles within the AFP, including Chief Scientist, Forensics, and National Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) Commander. His leadership has been instrumental in high-profile DVI operations, including the Victorian bushfires (2009), the Christmas Island tragedies (2010 and 2012), the Christchurch earthquake (2011), and the MH17 disaster response in the Netherlands (2014). His work has brought comfort to grieving families and set global benchmarks in forensic response and victim identification.

Dr Walsh holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Forensic Science from UTS, where he also developed Australia’s first bachelor’s degree in forensic biology. His contributions to forensic science research and education include two international textbooks, over 20 book chapters, and more than 200 articles and conference papers.

A recipient of the Public Service Medal, UTS Chancellor’s Award for Excellence, and the UTS Alumni Award for Excellence (Faculty of Science), Dr Walsh is known for his holistic approach to forensic science—combining technical expertise with a deep commitment to justice and community impact.

Forensic science is often portrayed as being about tools and methods, but Walsh knows there’s much more to it than that. A big thinker with a strong sense of social justice, his unique, holistic approach has brought lasting benefit to the criminal justice system and the communities it serves. It’s just one part of his considerable contribution.
