Early Hollywood breakthrough

Australian native Hugh Jackman made his first major US film appearance as Wolverine in the original X-Men. He reprised the role in the blockbuster sequels:

  • X2
  • X-Men: The Last Stand

Epic Australian cinema

In 2008, Jackman starred in Australia, directed by Baz Luhrmann, alongside Nicole Kidman. The film:

  • is set in pre–World War II northern Australia
  • features Jackman as a rugged cattle driver
  • follows a dangerous cattle drive across harsh terrain
  • climaxes during the Japanese bombing of Darwin

Award-winning stage performance

Jackman earned major acclaim for portraying Peter Allen in The Boy from Oz.

Honours include:

  • 2004 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical
  • Drama Desk Award
  • Drama League Award
  • Outer Critics Circle Award
  • Theatre World Award

Jackman began acting in Australian films including:

  • Paperback Hero
  • Erskineville Kings

He received:

  • Best Actor from the Australian Film Critics' Circle
  • Best Actor nomination from the Australian Film Institute

In 1999, he was named Australian Star of the Year at the Australian Movie Convention.

National recognition

In 2019, Jackman was appointed a Companion (AC) in the Order of Australia for:

  • service to the performing arts
  • global advocacy, particularly poverty eradication

After Joe was born, who was my last child, I enrolled in a Communications course at UTS and that was to change my life.
