At UTS we review and refresh our courses periodically to ensure that content is up to date and course design and delivery are meeting the needs of students and other stakeholders. We have made some minor changes to the Bachelor of Communication courses, including refreshing the Communication Core subjects and some discipline titles and subjects.
What are the main changes?
From 2026, the School of Communication will be introducing revised versions of the Bachelor of Communication suite of courses.
- Core subjects will change from 8 credit points to 6 credit points.
- Majors will be replaced with streams.
- Elective offerings will be 6 credit points rather than a mix of 6 and 8 credit points.
- There will be a change of name for some courses.
- Strategic Communication will change to Public Relations and Advertising
- Writing and Publishing will change to Creative Writing
- Media Arts and Production: from 2026, Media Arts and Production will no longer be offered as a major/stream in the Bachelor of Communication. Students wishing to study Media Arts at UTS will apply to undertake the new Bachelor of Creative Production in Media Arts.
What does this mean for you?
The revised changes to the Bachelor of Communication suite of courses will not impact your progression through the course version that you were admitted into. You will still be able to graduate from your current course.
No action is required from you.
You will remain in your version of the course and will continue your studies as per the typical program published for the year you started your course.
- Students who commenced in 2025 should refer to the 2025 course description via from the version dropdown under their course heading in the handbook (change the year dropdown to 2025).
- Students who commenced before 2025 should refer to the course description in the year they commenced in the Handbook Archives.
Some changes that you may see on your study plan
- Depending on your major, there may be a name or code change to subjects on your study plan. Where possible, we are making the same subject offerings to current students, so that they get to enjoy the same offerings as new students.
- In addition, you may see some new elective offerings in your study plan.
